Hutch, on the inside the 248's aft cabin is smaller that the queen size 268, The V berth looks just a bit shorter. The galley seems just a bit smaller. Not sure if the head is any smaller, and not sure that it could be.
On the outside most of the difference seems to be the rear seat and the fore deck. The 248's upholstered rear seat sits farther back than on the 268 and it forms the back wall of the boat above the smaller transom storage compartment. The fore deck is shorter than the 268. The helm and U shaped seating areas are about the same. There is approximately a 500 pound difference in weight.
I bought an '02 268 in October 2011, and we really like it. It has the 280 hp 5.7gi. We usually cruise at 3500-3600 with speeds in the upper 20's and just over 2 mpg, depending on load, trim, etc. I trailer it every weekend behind a 3/4 Chev and have no issues. Realistically, the boat on the trailer all gassed up and loaded for the weekend will tip the scales in the general area of 9500lb. By keeping it at home I trade slip fees and marina gas prices (an extra $1/gal) for the ability to load it and work on it. While we usually go to the Mississippi and St Croix rivers near Minneapolis, we can trailer to a destination of our choice. Just be sure to keep the trailer and tires in shape. The boat launches and loads reasonably well. The previous owner put a two speed crank style boat winch on it, which works well. It is a lot bigger than the '95 190 Horizon we had, but trailering the 268 is very feasible. As others have said, I would recommend the 268.
