BUYING a boat??

What's the difference of buying a used boat from a private party or a boat sales shop??
Any advantages or disadvantages? Private party may have more extras to give, but can you trust the boat is mechanically sound or has any hidden issues not being disclosed??

It no make no difference. Always get a 3rd party inspection. Other then that? PP boat sales are always cheaper, no overhead.

in Kentucky you don't pay sales tax on the private sale but you do from a dealer

In my case the private party boat, was almost $5,000 less than the two other places with the same boat and similar hours. One was a broker and had never driven the boat, so he knew it ran fine, but that was about it, and the other was Skipper Buds who said there service department looked it over. Owner was up front, said it needed new batteries, bellows, and probably could use new trailer tires.

Took it to a Four Winns authorized dealer, they went thru it and did some repairs I could have done, but still ended up thousands less. With savings put in a killer Alpine and Polk Audio stereo/amp/speaker combo, and am now adding a swimplatform as well.

Ask the person selling the boat, " What would you be doing to the boat if you were keeping it for another 3-5 years ? " I, was lucky, the guy was honest...

Usually it's $1,500 premium to have a dealer sell you the boat. They are going to have the basics reviewed (compression, bellows, impeller, batteries, props, oil, etc.) and up to par. It will be detailed too, which will save you some labor on cleaning up someone else boat. You're paying for piece of mind and if this is a first boat, or a step up after a gap of time, it's usually worth it.

Yes, to add, they will warranty it.

FYI - In Mass, you pay sales tax no matter what! Unless, the car or boat was registered for more than 6 months out of state after you bought it.
