Anyone consider one of these gas caddys? Boatersworld has them on sale for 100 bucks... 14 gallons... which is enough to be able to lift in and out of my Yukon...



What's the general thoughts? seems like it'd pay for itself for us dock boaters who have to pay 50 cents or more per gallon.

You could make one much more usable, for about the same cost.....

Through even Cabela's a 12 Gal "flat" gas can runs about $56,
Add hose assy $12
Strap it to a heavy duty two wheeler dolly with some decent pneumatic tires for about $40....
Then, go over the top, and integrate it into a reciever hitch rack at about $50. This way, it's low to the ground, and no loading it into/out of the truck. Just leave it attached to the hitch, and no fuel smell if some spills!

OK, so it's a little overboard, but I've been thinking of building one for a while.
Remember, fuel storage is a very good idea, as long as you either use it, or treat it with Stabil (or equiv). Because, just like Uncle Ned, bad gas can ruin a whole weekend!

Watch your marina rules. You don't want to get evicted for it. Also, spillage is still a concern when using portable gas. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for saving a buck, but sometimes the hassle isn't worth it.

+1 for checking your marina rules. I was thinking about it myself last year (as I was stuck paying $4.50 a gallon all summer at the only gas pump on the lake, when I couldn't tow my boat), until I found out that our marina forbids refueling on the docks. Not a "buy gas here instead" problem as our marina doesn't have a fuel dock, just a liability issue.

I keep mine on a lift at my own dock, so no regs to worry about. There's one marina on these lakes that pumps gas on the water for about a buck a gallon more than the local gas stations. I got in the habit of filling the boat at a gas station before dropping it in the water at the beginning of the season, then topping off the tank periodically, by filling and lugging three 5G gas cans. I've thought about the gas caddies a lot, but the pricing and the flight of steps that goes down to the dock has been a deterent. As I get used to higher gas prices, the pricing on the caddies doesn't seem so bad. For now the exercise is probably good for me.

That one sucks. I'll give you mine. It takes waaayyyy too long to fuel your boat. Then you cant get about 3 gallons out, the hose is too high. Dont waste your money on this one, get a good one.

I have a 25 gallon gas caddy it works pretty well. It is the only option I have since there is nowhere to buy gas on the lake I'm on. At one time there were 3 places to get gas on the lake but no more.

I purchased a 29 gallon gas caddy from Costco, it works double duty for the generator during hurricane season. The main problem I found is that most of the time the boat level is above the bottom of the level of the caddy. It is also very slow with gravity feed. It takes a really long time. Also unless you have access to both sides you have to turn the boat around. When I have time I use three 5 gallon cans.

A guy on the same dock as me had a 25 gallon gas caddy and he just gave up using it because it was such a PITA to deal with (i.e. spillage; weight; time; etc...). Also, given the fact that we are members of a non-profit organization, the gas is relatively cheap. On 12/29/2008 it was only $1.86 a gallon. You may want to look into joining a yacht club or other non-profit organization to avoid the mark up, but then again there are the club dues, etc... However, if you do a lot of boating, the savings on gas may offset the dues.

Though I'm not a member of a NFP, do remember in many cases the taxes you pay on gas is refundable. Check into your state. Mo is one of those. It's only about $0.17/gal. For me, that almost pays for the oil change.

It is illegal to put gas in any boat at your dock in our local marina's. Must not be illegal everywhere. I wish I could get away with it, but the fines are huge if you get caught.

Refueling at our marina is strictly prohibited but beyond that you would get run off by the other slip patrons in a heartbeat because of the fire risk.
