I'm new to the forum but glad I found you all! I have a 96' H190 with the 5.0FL (190hp). Only owned it since August and I'm ready to upgrade to newer, bigger. There is a left over 2016 H210 but it has the Mercruiser 4.3L with 220hp. I think that's a little weak for this size of boat. My wife and I have two boys (13 and 15) that like to tube and wakeboard, plus we like entertain. I can't find any reviews of the 4.3 on this boat but have asked for a test drive to compare with a Glastron 225 with the Merc 4.5, 250hp. Does anybody have any opinions or experience with the 4.3L and know if I should keep looking for bigger and newer?

Have you seen the 2016 H210 in person or taken a walk-through?

Somewhere in the mid-2000's boat manufacturers started counting the extended swim platform in the LOA, so what was a 19' boat in the 90's became a 20' or 21' boat in the mid-2000's and onward. My 17' boat from 2003 has as much cabin room or more than many of the 19' options on the market today (but mine does not have much of a swim platform). If you are looking to upgrade to something bigger due to additional cabin space needed, you may need to look at an H230 or above.

Hi and welcome. jmb23802 is correct on the change, FW currently measures according to if the swim platform is extended (optional) or fixed. For example, I have 3 year old 190 RS (still the exact same model as the current series) with the extended platform. It's 20'8" LOA with the platform. I have a 4.3 225 Volvo V-6 and it's the perfect engine IMO for the size. My capacity is 9 and it gets up on plane even with a full boat and is very lean on fuel.
The 210 you are looking has a fixed platform and it's only 11 inches longer than my 190 (21'7") when measuring both with platforms. But it is also 6" wider, comes in at 650 lbs heavier and can take one extra person.
You are most likely going to issues with 7-8 big guys in the boat getting on plane, but with your kids and another family you should be fine.
There is a reason that boat is on closeout from last year with that engine, but if you can get a great deal I'd jump on it. I grew up skiing with 6-7 guys on a 2.3 L bayliner capri and had some of the best times of my life.

A H210 with a 4.3 220hp is going to be a marginal performer - especially if you are talking about skiing, wakeboarding and other similar activities. I checked my 2016 guide and the H210 4.3 Alpha combo has a top speed of 41mph. For example, a 4.5 Merc (250hp) Alpha has a top end only 3 mph higher -- but gets you on plane quicker and with less effort. At 3000 rpm the 4.3 is at 10mph and the 4.5 is at 23, at 3500 rpm the 4.3 is doing 26 and the 4.5 is doing 30 mph. A H210 with a Volvo V-6 280 duo-prop will top out around 50.
When I checked today I could only find 3 2016 H210's with 4.3 Mercs in stock at dealers. I don't know what they are asking for these 2016's but the discount should be huge. We've only got one 2016 left in stock - a H230 with a 300 duo-prop and we are discounting this by approximately 1/3 of msrp.
Have them put the H210 4.3 in the water for you to test drive and bring along a half dozen of your biggest friends to see just how it will perform.

If this was a VP boat with a DP then I'd say it might be OK, but with a single prop drive, I agree it's going to be slow. My '88 is 20'9" and has a 4.3 and its not a speed boat by any means and I'm sure its several hundred pounds lighter than the later models. If it were closer to the beginning of the season you could try it out but I would not consider this boat without a thorough water test.

Thank you all so much. It's what I suspected but I am ha I got him out it in the water for a test ride. Will load it up as best we can. It's ha heavily discounted boat at $37k. Very good points about the length and I will bring my tape measure when I go drive it. Gotta believe that there is a reason for the deep discounts. Thanks all for the great feedback.

On a separate but related topic, I am going to look at a friend's newly put up for sale '05 H210 with the Volvo 5.7L. Super clean and well maintained and probably just the opposite concern with respects to power - too much/fuel guzzler? Either way, on the brand new 210 w/the 4.3, still have not heard back from the dealer regarding the request for a test drive. Any known Volvo 5.7L issues to be concerned with? Appreciate all the help.

I wouldn't worry about it being a fuel guzzler. Fuel use is based on Horsepower Used, not Horsepower Available. In other words, the 4.3 and 5.7 would use about the same fuel while cruising at 35 mph. (or any other equal speed). If the bigger engine leads you to always cruise faster, then it will use some more fuel, but at the same speed, it will use approx the same fuel.

The bigger engine will also use 1/3 more fuel while idling, but the fuel you use while idling is not significant enough to worry about.

There will always be issues with Volvo fuel pumps, if they have not been replaced since new.
