Generally, A powered Sub is fitting for someone running the rest of their system on deck power. It allows for an easy add-on. If you are looking for a more serious improvement, a seperate amp is the way to go.

Thanks Brent. I figured the powered sub would be okay, but not the best and most versatile way to go.

Bought a new Head Unit last night, so I will install that with the old speakers for now. Hopefully add a sub and amp later. That is if we ever get back to 40 hour weeks.

Cap'n Morgan,

Let me suggest you swap out your cockpit speakers before you get an amp and sub. The stock speakers at least on my Vista and others on here are crap. There is no way they will be able to keep up with the sub. I really think you will get a better bang for you buck. Naturally then you can and will get the sub and amp.

That's the plan captwalt. But for now they will do okay with just the Sony HU. They are still the stock Sony speakers that came with the boat, and are adequate for moderate volume levels. Unfortunately, I can only add stuff to the overall system in pieces, as funds (and the admiral) will allow.

millhaven_nice_guy, the short answer to your question is that the majority of today's amps do have the crossovers built in. You could most definitely still use your stuff, though, provided you are OK with using the input level system for connecting the amp rather than the RCA input system that newer amps use. Yours might have both, but I'm betting on it being input level.

Thanks Paul for your input!

I haven't look at my old system in a long time but I seem to remember having RCA' for something. I remember buying a package of multicoloured RCA's. I assume "line input" is where you extend the would be speaker wire to the amp? That's not a big deal if I decide to go with my older stuff. It just seems a shame to have the stuff in my seacontainer not being used and I won't have to clear any excessive funds through the "finance office"!

I will try and get some pictures on the weekend.
