Yes Cincy, that was for you
. The Volvo shop manual specifies that the steering ram be greased every 50 hours or once per season, more often under some conditions (presumably if the boat spends time in a salt air environment). You just turn the drive whichever direction to cause the ram to extend, and apply grease (the Volvo grease, of course!
) to the ram itself.
There are also two pivot bushings in the cylinder, but the shop manual makes it sounds as though you wouldn't grease those unless the whole cylinder assembly is being removed & replaced.
Unless I'm missing it, Seloc makes no mention of greasing anything on the cylinder, except for some non-DP models which have a grease zerk on the cylinder housing.
I'm still uncertain on this - the steering cylinder works (and appears to be assembled) exactly the same as the trim cylinders on the drive, and of course we don't grease those. I would think greasing the steering ram would either 1) do nothing because the seals would "scrape" it all off, or 2) contaminate the system.
This is the first time I've taken a hard look at the manuals on this, and my conclusion is that someone needs to call Four Winns for the answer and let us know
.
Does your squeak only happen while turning the wheel?
