Well, the heads are junk and the engine has already been bored out 40 over. Its in rough shape overall and not worth the $$. Through the grape vine, we located a long block truck engine that is in great shape. It had a knock in the bottom and when we pulled it apart, as expected, it spun a bearing. We are going to have the crank shaved and reassembled. Its a Vortec, and did have fuel injection, but no intake manifold included, so we are going to purchase the intake and use the carb for now and eventually upgrade to fuel injection. Going to replace the freeze plugs with brass.

Has anyone ever used high-temp epoxy to coat the water jackets of an intake manifold? I know the marine intakes can come with a special coating, but has anyone done this DIY? If so, any recommendations for what kind of epoxy?

I had not heard of an epoxy coating as I have researched rebuilding my 2003 5.7 EFI Vortec engine.


I ended up going with a complete reman marine short block which I am installing now. I had two pistons overheated with siezed rings in my engine.

I am going to either rebuild my shortblock and sell it as a unit -- or I may sell for pieces.
the crank journals are perfect. --- I also have a new cam that came with the reman short block. I am not using it as I am putting my old cam back with the corresponding roller lifters and such. cam specs are 264/268 and lift 425/435. It is new with full size journals.

Let me know if there are any parts of a Volvo marine vortec shortblock that might be of use to you before I sell them on ebay.
I will price them competitively.

We decided to buy a new crank instead of having the old honed, and also got a new GM high performance cam. We cleaned the heads, pulled apart the valves and washed everything in a parts washer. New rings arrived, new bearings, we will be able to start putting it all back together this weekend! Hope to get it running on a stand in a few weeks!

Almost!! Earlier tonight, we finished putting the engine back together, and it looks great. New rings, crank, cam, intake manifold, and oil pump. We cleaned out the exhaust manifolds and risers, checked them thoroughly, and repainted all parts with dupli-color hi-temp paint. Re-manufactured Rochester carb on its way next week. We stripped the outdrive and repainted, new water pump, cleaned and ready to go back on. There is snow in the forecast tomorrow and possibly Friday, so we will unwrap the boat this weekend and get ready to put it all back together!

We put the engine in yesterday, dropped in really easily! We began bolting everything back on, alternator, power steering pump, etc. Looks fantastic!

Carburetor should be here on Thursday. Seats are being reupholstered and should be done this week. We have to paint the transom assembly, and order up the zincs, and wire up for the 2nd battery with switch. If everything goes well, we should be firing up for the first time next weekend!

Here are a couple of pics of the installation. My father and I are Chevy guys, so we couldn't resist but to paint the block and heads with classic Chevy Orange just like the '64 Impala we used to have. I will take more pics today now that it is in the boat and some parts bolted on.
