Everything in the engine compartment looks fine. The belts all align properly and there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with any of the pulleys, plus the tension on the belts is good. Everything runs fine until I accelerate and then I get some squeaking/squealing and I smell burning rubber. I open the compartment and there is a rubber burning smell, a little smoke, and you can see rubber "powder" where the belt is obviously being torn up. It appears to be the alternator belt, but there is no visible sign other than the rubber powder. Without the belts on everything spins freely and quietly. I am a loss on this. Any ideas?
One thing I did notice, and this is a long shot, it that when trying to replace the thermostat I found it tucked up inside the thermostat housing and I am having a heck of a time getting it out. Any chance that the thermostat was the wrong size and eventually slipped up in there and is restricting water passage and causing the water pump belt to slip under the strain of trying to move water that is being restricted? I know its a long shot, but everything else looks fine.
Thanks for your help.
