My father was informed by the marina that his 2000 245 Sundowner is due for bellows replacement.

There is a lot of talk about these on there, and I am curious to how tedious they are to service. He is running a 5.7 GXI VP DuoProp.

Is this something he could tackle? or does do you recommend having the dealer do it? Also Skipper Buds @ Marblehead want about $500 to do it. Is this reasonable??

Thanks in advance!

I have seen prices for that job around $300 to $350. $500 seems high.

They are original.

We thought $500 seemed a bit high.

Is that about the right age for replacement?

I'd say at 9 years it's due, depending on how it was stored (if stored with the drive down they tend to last longer). I had mine replaced with the gimble bearing about 4 years ago and it was 350 for the bellows and gimble bearing, the ujoints were still OK though.
If you can check carefully in the folds of the bellows for cracks that can be a good guide to when it has to be replaced. If there are no cracks it may still be OK.

Once the drive is off, bellows replacement on the DPS is straightforward, you just need to follow the procedures in the (ideally VP) manual
