It's unfortunately very easy to switch the inlet and outlet hoses on the raw water pump; I did that once when in a rush, but thankfully I checked before starting the engine. You might get a very small amount of water passing through. I became paranoid about it; the hose from the transom is now labelled with arrows and the pump has inlet and outlet written on its pipes! Later I found it's not necessary to remove the hoses from the pump when changing the impeller or winterising; the pump body can be removed from the backplate without taking them off.

I don't think it's likely you could have switched hoses at the thermostat cover; the hose from the raw water pump is a smaller diameter to that of the recirculation pump to thermostat hose and the 2 hoses for the manifolds are smaller still. (There may also be a much smaller diameter hose for the fuel cell with a corresponding small hose from the fuel cell to one riser).

well... i finally figured out MY overheating problem on my 1995 5.0 FL ... after going thru the hose backwash, replacing the thermostat, and... double-checking my timing (which was ok) i FINALLY THOUGHT duh- i forgot to check the power steering cooler which is in direct line with the raw water to the pump inlet! after removing the hoses, i found the cooler to be packed with both seaweed and yellow jacket bees! after flushing from both ends and rodding out the tubes, i now have a CLEAN and unrestricted flow the the pump and engine!! sure beats taking it to the shop especially with them so backlogged this time of the year! WHEW !!! hope this might help out with your problem??- bk

Bees....That's a new one to be sure!

I had a similar problem with mine. I found that the previous owner had replaced a raw water pump but didn't go looking for the failed impeller remnants that were literally CRAMMED in the oil cooler. I found all the impeller parts there. Since the oil cooler has fairly small holes for the water to go thru it stopped all the pieces.

Anytime you have an overheating issue at high power settings and you don't at idle or low RPM, it's usually because of blockage either in the raw water pump , after it, or even corrosion blocked risers and possibly manifolds.

Cheers,

Rick

It seems that blockage was the answer... Although, I am not sure what was block or where. I went down to the boat with full intent to replace the impellor... but first I decide to try and use the freshwater wash out and I pulled off the hoses to the water pump and flush those out. I didn't see what I washed out, but I took the boat for a spin down the river and all was good. I still have the impellor on the boat and tools to fix it if necessary, but it looks like the overheating problem is solved. This is a new one on me.
