I've got just a hair under 150hrs on my boat, and I've been meaning to check the engine alignment. I went ahead and bought the tool on eBay last fall, but never got around to checking it. I could have easily used a broomstick vs. the shaped metal rod I bought. I will say that the rod is nice that it is the exact size you need to fit all the way in, but not necessary.

I also built a drive stand out of a 2x8 cut into 4 sections, and four casters. It worked really well! I had my drive off, alignment checked, and back on in about an hour. Alignment was perfect, so no adjustment needed.

It isn't nearly as hard to pull the DP-S drive off as I had imagined, and it when back on real easy also.

In the days when I was a student and money was tight, well tighter than it is now, I used to make clutch alignment tools out of a length of steel rod and insulating tape, the drive alignment tool is basically the same as the clutch alignment tool. Bigger diameter= diameter of splined area, smaller diameter = diameter the spigot.

Was there a need to replace any gasket when the drive is removed? I need to add some grease to the gimbel and wanted to know if any gaskets needed replacement.

No, there are only O-rings, which I did not replace any. Mine looked to be in good shape, as well as everything else.

There's also the water pipe seal (around the black water pipe/ plastic nut on the port side); it's meant to be replaced each time, but I must admit I've re-used one after checking it was OK, with no issues. What is important though is that it doesn't fall off when the outdirive is refitted ! It's meant to be glued into the groove on the pivot housing. If it's defective or missing, it will allow air to be sucked into the cooling water when the upper part of the outdrive is out of the water, when the boat is on the plane.
