Hello, I'm new to the forum and to boats in general. I'm having a simple problem with a '89 Horizon 200 with the 5.0L. Had to put a new starter on it today (not hard at all) and cranked it up to de-winterize it only to figure out that the trim doesn't work. The solenoid doesn't even click. I'm assuming it's a fuse or relay some where but I can't locate either. I read something about a reset switch for the trim motor but didn't see it either. Can anyone here point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Jesse

On my boat, there is a breaker (red reset button) located on the top of the engine mounted to a little bracket. I would check there first and reset it.

Likely fuse-- mine goes about once a season for no appararent reason. Dig up the owners manual and find the fuse box.

On my '90 Horizon, the trim motor is in the engine compartment, at the back, to the right of the motor mounted to the transom wall. There is a reset button (maybe red) over around the side of it that is a pain to see without a mirror and light. I believe theres also some relays or fuses on the side as well. Ill try to get a picture of it tomorrow.

I didn't see anything around the trim motor. There was just one strand of three wires (blue, green, black) that went to fuses (very cleverly disguised) and solenoids on top of the motor. I pulled the two 50amp fuses and one 20amp fuse and they tested fine with a DMM. I still don't see a reset button but I haven't been able to look during the day. Does anyone know how to correctly check the solenoids with a DMM?

Thanks again!

You really need to know that you are getting power to the unit before you go worring about the solenoids --
Verify that first ---- you should be able to connect the voltmeter somewhere you can see it from the helm and activate the switch and see the meter respond. If you see than, then persue farther into the unit.

I figured it out. It was something ridiculous that I over looked. Apparently I missed a wire when hooking the starter back up. I had no idea that the trim motor got it's power from the starter so I never bothered looking there.
