I put my 258 in the water for the first time and the trim would only go half way down.... had it out later...and it would only go up and not down....

I then parked it in the slip and it finally went down again?? Do i need a new switch? need a new trim pump? or just need some more fluid?

Thanks.

The easiest thing to check is the fluid level; however, it shouldn't really give the effect you indicate, as basically the oil that is pumped into one end of the cylinders is replaced by oil displaced from the other end.

There are a couple of relays on the trim pump assembly; they can become faulty, loose/ have corroded contacts.

When it stopped moving, did the pump actually stop running , or did it sound like it was working against something?

Some VPs have an electronic trim limiter, they can give problems, usually related to the trim sender; is your trim sender 3 wire or a 2 wire one?

When you say it wont go up or it wont go down....are you hearing the pump run, but not getting any motion or is the pump simply not running at all?

If you are hearing it run, but not getting movement, I would think there is air in the lines and or low fluid.

If its not running at all, I would assume electrical and start checking all connections and grounds.

Well the first time I trimmed it down it only went halfway but the motor kept going. Then the next day I couldn't trim it down and it didnt' even give a motor sound at all. Then I was able to trim it down but I am not sure how far it went bc the trim guage is kind of off.

Actually just figured it out. The relay cable is defective. $125 for a new one, 1.5 hours of labor to fix.
