how hard is it to pull an SX outdrive on a 2007 H190? Does anyone have pictures on how to do it correctly and the right process/order? I was going to pull it to grease u joint, gimble along with checking the bellows.
Do I need any special tools? I plan on getting a shop manual, any suggestoins on the right one would also be great.

Is this something that is pretty easy to do it you take your time and have some mechanical ability?

Thanks

They stopped fitting U/Js with grease fittings sometime between 1999 and late 2003. When they came out with the SXA, they eliminated the grease fitting for the gimble bearing as well. Engine alignment and bellows checking/ changing are the only routine maintenance tasks now for the SXA that require removal of the drive.

Which....with what you said...I would check it/have the alignment done. I took my boat in last week to get the alignment checked/adjusted. Turns out my upper unit seal was leaking drive fluid into my bellows...

Well it's always a good idea to remove the drive to make sure the bellows is not leaking, the input shaft seal is not leaking, and also to grease the drive shaft splines...I think Mercs had a grease fitting on the coupler to do this but I don't know if Volvos did, and I can see from removing mine yearly that the grease on the splines does not last forever and I'd hate to see someone's drive get rusted in place and then be impossible to remove...the same thing can happen with lower uints on outboards if they are never removed...I am not a fan of removing grease fittings on u-joints, driveshafts and bearings although the sealed wheel bearings on my Jeep have held up well...

Here's a sign of the times...my old 98 Grand Cherokee has grease fittings on the upper ball joints, tie rod and drag link joints (7 in total)...my 07 Grand Cherokee has none...but when its time to replace ball joints on it...I am going to have the greaseable MOOG ones installed...

So pretty much the only reason to pull the outdrive is to replace/check bellows, check allingment (how hard is this?), and grease the splines? When would one ever grease the gimble and u joints?

thanks

They are using these permenantly lubed gimbles and ujoints and as long as they don't get water in them they probably last a pretty long time just as the permenantly lubed wheel bearings and ujoints on most modern SUVs and pick up trucks...
Checking the bellows for water and the input shaft seal on the drive is really important, because if you get water in there during the season and it sits there all winter it's likely you will have to replace the gimble and ujoints in the spring...
If the input shaft seal leaks drive oil in the bellows then the drive will be low on oil and sooner or later you may have a real expensive failure
Engine alignment usually doesn't change but it can if engine mounts settle or there is rot in an enging mount stringer...if the engine is out of alignment you can ruin the coupler which is expensive and can be replaced only by pulling the engine...
checking alignment is easy...getting it right if it's not is not so easy...
Finally if the grease on the drive shaft splines dries out the drive shaft can corrode into the coupler making the drive nearly impossible to remove...
