I recently had spark plugs replaced as regular maintainence on my 2004 four winns 378 with 8.1 volvo's with about 435 hours..The mechanic didn't like the way the plugs looked so he did a compression test and found #4 and#6 cylinder had only 60 lbs of pressure. He pulled the heads and one of the heads was a total mess. He told me the engine had been sucking water for a long time. I am going to rebuild heads on both engines but I don't want this to happen again. I am trying to find out if there is a reliable fix for this problem. I believe my engins already have the baffle that volvo installed as a fix but that obviously that did not help.I have read that Volvo used a vacuum kit as part of the remedy but I have not been able to find one. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Doug

I'd go over to
http://www.iboats.com
and ask your question on the I/O forum, there are some very knowledgable people over there who can probably find the informatin you need. I do recall there being a problem with these engines and it may be due to either the camshaft used (makes the engine more likely to suck in water) and the design of the exhaust system. You might need to add riser blocks (extensions) to raise the height of the risers relative to the static water level in the boat.

Here is the thread Lou was referring to. Appears no definative answer, and you have had your
input already from Volvo.
