First year 1998 220 Horizon 5.7Gsi with SX outdrive.

I successfully changed oil and drained water from engine!!!

Problem is I cannot remove the drain screw from the outdrive - talked to the shop that winterized this boat by previous owner. They always run with antifreeze and do not drain anything. Therefore, I do not know when is plug was last removed... Will not budge with impact screwdriver - I do not want to strip anymore.

Question - I disconnected the hose from inside engine compartment which goes to out drive and flushed with a quart of pink antifreeze. Do you think this would flush out any water and replace with pink? Am I safe with just flushing? I had it in the full up position when flushing, then lowered to drain any remaining pink. Please chim in if this is adequate protection.

Apart from the oil drain plug, there is no drain plug on the outdriive. When was the last time the outdrive oil was changed?

Per the OEM manual;
Pivot Housing:
"To drain the cavity in pivot housing, tilt drive unit to the full tilt up position and remove the water drain plug from the port side of the pivot housing. Tilt the drive unit to the full tilt down position. Allow unit to drain."

Well... I tried as hard as I could without cracking the outdrive and no luck!

Oil has been changed and is good!

One other question - while warming the engine I had alot of exhaust coming out just below the drive. I checked the exhaust bellow, good shape no cracks and tightly attached. I should of tilted up drive at idle to try to see where exhaust was coming from. Some was coming out of prop, but only 25% the rest was blowing straight down out of the drive.

When you lower the outdrive to the full down position all water will drain out. If your storing it outside cover up the prop hub area with a plastic bag or something to be sure rainwater/snow doesn't get in there and freeze up and crack it.

I think this is the plug in the pivot housing, see part # 70

My OMC Cobra has similar plugs, one on the port side and two on the starboard side, and when you remove them water (not a lot but some) does come out...so I'd first try spraying some penetrating oil around the plug to try to get it in the threads and let is sit for a few days and try again. I'm not sure if not draining that area will result in a crack but I do know water comes out of the plugs on mine...

Note how similar the transom mounts are from OMC to Volvo, they basically used the OMC transom mount gimble system and then added cone clutch gears to the drive....

And as an aside, there was someone on here with an SX that got a crack in the drive because the slot on the starboard side where the drive meets the pivot housing got clogged, that slot (about the thickness of a medium screwdriver blade) has to drain or the water can expand and cause a crack...

Well, I didn't know that ! On my previous 1999 boat, there were no plugs and there are none on my 2004 one, so 1998 must have been the last time they were fitted . In the parts list the original pivot housing (#3855350) has actually been superceded by the later (#3857979) one.

As to the exhaust, that is normal.

Thanks for the help/replies,

Just in case there was trapped water - pouring pink through the pickup hose from inside the engine compartment with drive up should have mixed with any remaining water. I then lowered and drained all water from drive again. I feel confident I removed all water... I will let you know in spring if not the case. Being my first winterization of an I/O I wanted to be super catious and anal about getting all water out. My outboard I sold sure was alot easier to winterize. I poured the entire gallon of pink back into the engine block, thermostat, water pump and exhaust manifold hoses... cheap insurance.

I am guessing that screw may never have been removed... Looked new until I was through with it! I decided to stop before cracking the entire case.

The boat is dropped off at for storage... I'm already waiting for spring.

Yes, waiting for spring here as well even though Autumn has just begun; our boat is still in the water, but gale force winds and low temperatures / rain make it unlikely we'll use it again this weekend, maybe not again this season; another one with less than 20 engine hours!

Yep it's cooling off here too...might get in a couple more nice days but I am thinking of pulling it out of the water in early Oct and winterizing it on a nice 65* day instead of a 40* day in Nov...had a great summer one of hottest on record and many days of flat calm water out in the Sound.....

My old OMC Cobra has been used in salt water for years and the three plugs in the pivot housing came right the first time I winterized it, go figure....
I always put some OMC triple guard grease on plugs like that and other bolts and they all come out pretty easy the next time...
