I've always had someone else winterize my boat, but thinking this year I'll do it myself. For those of you who do your own winterization, what do you use to fog the motor? Do you use the regular "fogging oil" or something else? I ask because I recently watched a video and the guy fogged a motor by pouring 4 oz of Marvel Mystery oil down the carb.

I use regular fogging oil, on mine which has EFI it's the last thing I do and all I do it remove the flame arrestor and the coil wire from the coil (or cap) and have someone crank it over while I spray down the throttle body for about 10 seconds......some say you should remove plugs and do each cylinder but I never have

Are you carb of fuel injected? If fuel injected DO NOt use fogging oil!

EFI I dont fog, regular carb I use 10w30 like my dad did and his dad before him.

This is my first year with EFI and will be winterizing my boat for the first time. So you dont want to fog down an EFI???

No you will gum up injectors! If you do a search some run a mixture of fuel, stabilizer and some 2 stroke oil and that's how they "fog" an EFI engine. Don't run this through your on board gas tank. Just hook your fuel line up to a jerrry can if you are going to do this.

With EFI, a lot of people take off the fuel filter, pour out most of the gas, refill with fogging oil, put the filter back on, and run the engine until it smokes or dies. Not saying you should or shouldn't, but that's another method.

When fogging, I use ATF. This was recommended by a few gear-heads I know. It doesn't tend to gum-up like oil after it has sat a while.
With EFI you Can dump it directly into the intake, so the fogging oil isn't actually going through the injectors, and still lining the cylinder walls. This time around, I am going to try using one of the vacuum lines like when I use a fuel system cleaner.

I've seen people pull each plug and use spray in the cylinder. Then pull the kill switch and turn it over a few times. Seems like alot of work for me.

This is the fogging mix I use. Found this on the merc website.

Fogging Mixture
In a 6 US gal (23 L) remote outboard fuel tank, mix:
5 US gal (19 L) regular unleaded 87 octane (90 RON) gasoline.
64 fl oz. (1.89 L) Mercury or Quicksilver Premium Plus 2-Cycle TC-W3 Outboard oil.
5 fl oz. (150 mL) Mercury or Quicksilver Fuel System Treatment and Stabilizer, OR
1 fl oz. (30 mL) Mercury or Quicksilver Fuel System Treatment and Stabilizer
Concentrate

It's my understanding that pouring through the intake on an EFI engine might end up with most of it just sitting in the intake because of lower air velocities than on a carb'ed engine.

Was asking myself the same question about fogging my EFI 7.4 Volvo.

Just to be clear if you don't fog its OK or NOT?

Mixing up a batch of gas and hooking it up and .......... seems like too much trouble.

The way acguy stated to do it is the "proper" way. However you will find may marinas no longer fog, and most engine builders will tell you not to also. If a boat sits for 6 months you probably will have no rust at all in the cylinders and whatever may form will be absolutely minimal. Unless someone is going to store a boat for extended periods we never fog anymore.

I pull the spark plugs and spray the fogging oil directly into the cylinders, then spin the engine with the plugs out, then check the plugs and reinstall.
