Read through the archives and didn't find an answer... My plans are to get the actual hours on my boat from the computer and add a meter before we hit the water next spring.

My questions are... first, is there a cheap tool we can buy for our boats to check the hours (or did any of you buy a diagnostic tool that does the trick)? Wouldn't an auto parts retailers (NAPA, Carquest, ect) be able to plug in to get a reading too?

Also were all the meters around 2003 mounted in the instrument panel or were they also placed near the engine? Any pictures of your location? Thanks guys!

All the best!
S...

On my buddy's 2002 H260, his hour meter is located under the pull up storage area under the walkthrough on the starboard side. In that storage area is a battery, the battery switch and the hour meter. The hour meter was mounted high along the outside wall of this storage area, with the battery switch mounted next to it. I don't have any pictures, but remember it well when I helped him fix his bilge pump earlier this year. If you need pictures, let me know. He keeps his boat in my Toybox. It's pretty cool walking in and seeing two H260's sitting side by side. Kind of like walking into a FW showroom.

I have no idea on a tool to get the hour off the computer. I would think you're on the right track looking into an auto parts store to do that for you.

Are you sure you don't already have an hour meter built into the dash? My 2001 had it built into the VDO guage set along with the clock... If not then your new hour meter should be located in an easily viewable area after all it's there to remind you of when you should be doing service. How do you intend to power the new meter? You basically need a hot wire from the ignition/run side of the switch. You can get this at the ignition switch (dash) or at the coil depending on where you decide to place the meters

Why worry about the back hours? Just do a thorough service and start counting off your newly installed meter. Check witha VP service center if you really want to know if getting the back hours is possible. I think your asking alot of the older ECM.

BTW, my 1998 had an hour meter hidden in the rear most compartment where the convertible top was stored.

It's possible you will find an autoparts store with a scanner that also has the necessary MEFI adapter to read the Volvo EFI. Unlikely but possible. The scan tool will only read engine codes, it will not re set them. Same for hour meter readings.
You will need to know what kind of control module you have.
MEFI-1, MEFI-2, MEFI-3, MEFI-4 or MEFI-5. Then hope the auto parts store has the appropriate EFI Scan Tool adapter for the scan tool they have.

The scan tool for your application would be a Rinda 94050m = $465
The EFI adapter for MEFI 1-4 is $55.00
The EFI adapter for MEFI 5 is $299.00

Laptop software that will tell you everything will run you about $874.00 or $650 if you are marine certified. Diacom makes it.

Expensive propositions either way just to find out back hours.

Thanks JDW... I bet that is a cool sight having those 260's parked in your place side by side. I need to stay far away from you or I'll start thinking I need a H260 too! :)

Thanks Millhaven... I've hunted all over for a meter on my boat. The original owner thought for sure he had one but we couldn't find it. I keep thinking I'm just over looking it... but it's apparently not there. :?

Cap M... thank you.. a bit pricey, huh. I've never been impressed with my local boat guys... but I may have to call them to get a price for the read. It looks like this might get crossed off the "to do list" after all due to the $$.

All the best!

Very cool... I have a file of receipts/docs I got with the boat from the original owner and just found hours on the boat as of July 2007... :D Not only does this show total hours... it also shows run time hours from 0-1000 RPM's, from 1001-2000, 2001-3000, 3001-4000, and from 4001-5000 RPM's... along with some other cool things. Max Engine RPM logged was 4890... a lot of other interested stuff too.

Cap M... shows system type too... GM Delco MEFI 4 Mode 1 Master.

Thanks for the replies guys...

All the best!

The info you have was from the Diacom software. My mechanic has that software and it does tell you a ton of
info on your engine like you mention. You just need the software, a laptop and cable to plug into your ECM.
Simple to run, anyone can do it, but it's somewhat cost prohibitive for the average shadetree mechanic.
