I have a 1994 Four Winns Fling and i havent had too many problems out of it but we took it out on the water yesterday and when we started it in neutral it went in reverse! We shut cut the engine off and tried again, and it worked but after about 15 mins of driving it we cut it off and it did the same thing, until we put back in neutral and tried to go forward and the boat wouldnt go anywhere we had to get towed back to shore!!! i have no clue what the problem could be im no expert and i dont have the manual. PLease if any one has any suggestions i would greatly appreciate it!!!! -Mrs. Hendo

Your shift cable most likely needs adjustment or it is broke. This is a job that someone with basic mechanical skills could tackle on their own. However, based on your post, I would suggest finding a good marine mechanic to do this for you. Good luck!

Ok I replaced the shifter cable, which was totally trashed, so says the man at west marine , very simple to install, and took it out to test it and when we got it started it was idling really high and the position where neutral was suppose to be was about three inches below, i had to search for neutral, i dont know why it would be acting this way, meaning i didnt touch the gears on the shifting column for it to be out of place??? Any suggestions would be great !!!!!! I think i might need to get a new shifting column because its extremly tight when shifting, not as smooth as it was before I changed the cable....
Sincerely,
Mrs.Hendo

I am guessing one of a couple things....

1. That may not be the proper length cable.
2. It still may need to be adjusted.
3. Is the new cable routed identically to the way the old cable was routed?

The fact that it's a shorter cable is most likely the problem.

It sounds like you took you're old cable into West Marine, which was definitely the right thing to do. But they still sold you a different cable length? That shouldn't have happened in my opinion. I would take the new shift cable back to WM and tell them you would like to exchange it for the correct size.
