I have a 1984 Four Winns with a 350 mercruiser 260hp its a 19ft open bow inboard. When I bought the boat, the owner said the engine either needed a new block or gaskets because the oil was milky. He still ran the boat engine before I bought it and it sounded fine didn't sound like knocking or anything. So I bought it for very cheap and also because my friend who is a marine mechanic would do it for a couple hundred. My friend replaced the gaskets, replaced the distributor cap and the rotor. (There was no crack in block) So everything was put back together and the boat wont start now. It cranks but there is no spark.

Any idea what this could be? I have seen a couple things online about maybe being the coil or something but it ran before the gaskets were done...

Please help! I wanna get it on the water before I start medic school in 3 weeks!

he put the dist in backwards. Reset the engine to TDC on firing stroke just after the intake valve closes, check the dist make sure the rotor is on #1. Common mistake people accidently set the timing to the wrong stroke of TDC. I know i've done it enough times.

I dont want to sound like Captain Obvious, but if he is a marine mechanic (or any type of engine mechanic)...shouldnt he know how to diagnose/fix something like that?

True that. Didn't you have him start up the boat before you paid him for his work? Take it out for a sea trial first? Apparently he didn't do the work you paid for. I would seriously consider who you call friends.
