The wires for the sender come into the transom mount near the raw water intake hose. It can be tough to get to that spot. If there is a way, I'd try to use the old sender wiring to pull the new sender wiring into the transom, the wiring has a plug, that has to plug into the hole in the transom mount. There is also a clip, that is supposed to hold that plug in place from the inside.
BTW, I found the OE OMC ones lasted about 1 1/2 seasons in salt, my aftermarket Sierra one has actually lasted longer.
My mechanic did a modification to make the replacement easier. He drilled a hole on the side of the transom mount, and I can run the wire up the transom of the boat like a transducer wire. The original plug and wiring I left in place, sealed up with 3M 4200.
