Holley carbs are tuned for sea level @ 70*F. For every 2000ft above sea level, you can go down 1 jet size. I would just buy the jet kit. You should have a 2300 series Holley 2bbl (marine edition).

How to tune (this one explains things well, there's 1000x sites out there). You'll need a vacuum gauge.

How to read the plugs to verify jetting

Want to avoid all of that?????

E10 gasoline generally runs 2 jet sizes bigger then Non-Ethanol gas. Holley carbs are tuned for non-ethanol gasoline. SO... at those altitudes 3600/7000ft... Just run E10 pump gas with no other changes. Done. If it stumbles/hesitates when punching the throttle just advance the ignition a few degrees. Your boat is a 1997, so the Holley carb has vition seals, A1 rated USCG fuel lines, and a plastic fuel tank. All Volvo Penta engines are rated for E10 (but not tuned for it from VP).

Awesome thank you for the reply. I have been looking at getting one of those jet kits.

Two things, what is E10?

Also what is the stock jet size?

Thanks

I can't find much of anything about stock jet size. Maybe a #70. Also, Four Winns might have modified the stock jet size because a 4.3 in a 18ft boat would run differently due to load then a 4.3 in a 22ft boat. The only real way to know is to check what's in there and to read the plugs.

That is what I was thinking you were talking about. I couldn't find anything as well on a stock jet size. I think I have a 70 in it now but smell rich fuel. I will check the plugs and size of jet to see what is going on. If a #70 is stock for sea level should I go down one or two sizes for Lake powell and go 3 or 4 sizes to run at 7000'? Thanks

Just for informational purposes. Four Winns does zero modifications to engines, carbs, outdrives etc. The engines come completely assembled from the manufacturer, and FW just drops them in , hooks them up, and runs them for a short time. If a particular customer who lives in high altitude environment orders a boat, it would be speced to have different settings for those conditions. Otherwise, the dealer would have to do the modifications as required.
Same thing goes for any other high volume boat builder.

As capt morgan said, it might be different. Depends were your boat was originally sold.

For every 2000ft rule of thumb go down 1 jet. Right now @ 7000ft if you're running RICH that's correct because the stock jetting is too big for 7000ft if it was originally a low altitude boat.

To run at 7000ft, roughly 4 jet sizes smaller then stock (if 70, then run 66)
To run at 3600ft, roughly 2 jet sizes smaller then stock (if 70, then run 68)

That's all guesswork though, the plugs tell the real story. You could always get the fuel injected 4.3 exhaust bits cause they have an o2 sensor (they should fit I think) and purchase a wideband O2 gauge kit http://www.zeitronix.com/Products/zt2/zt2.shtml

You could also just run regular automotive fuel with 10% ethanol and not 0% marine fuel. It should allow you to make no jet changes as it's close enough at both altitudes and should run much better for you.

I checked the plugs that I ran with last year and they seem to be perfect. So I will stick with the #70 for now. Thanks
