Did you get this fixed. It's not that difficult. There was a Service Bulletin by Volvo to remove these flaps because they are notorious for breaking. I had one that was broken and I was able to push it down to the bottom of the Y, take off the bellows from outside, break the flap in half then pull it out from outside.

I can't imagine that it would be that difficult to get that out of there, you'd have to remove the risers on both sides (unless you know for sure which side it was on) and remove the drive because it could be in the ex passage that goes into the drive.

I never understood why Volvo eliminated them, the ones on my 24 year old Cobra are still fine (I checked them when I did the manifolds in June). I don't like the idea of water being able to rush up the exhaust if you have to slow down suddenly. They can fail if you have a bad overheat, but this boat has been in salt water for over 10 years and they are fine......

Volvo sold a drill fixture for re-drilling the flapper valve shaft holes in the top of each side of the "Y" pipe. In 1998 the tool was about $100. The 2 pins and 4 rubber bushings were maybe $10-20 at that time. The idea was to drill a new set of holes at a different angle than the original holes. This "re-clocking" or rotating the flapper valve in the pipe could actually be done several times, if needed. The hose connecting the "Y" pipe to the exhaust elbow covers and seals the drilled holes. I did it on my boat and it has been fine for 13 years.

well i took it to a mechanic and they did it for 75$ because they said it was a pretty simple fix..... well it ran fine for about a week actually better than ever...... however they didnt replace it.... they just took it off so after a couple weeks of not using the boat the salt water crystalized and seized the engine. so now not only do i need to replace the manifolds and risers i need either just the block of the engine or a complete rebuilt engine..... anyone have any good websites/companies/places to get the parts that i need

How did you get water in your engine? Volvo service bullitin says they are not needed and to remove them. I also read that they quit using them around 1999. I am going to be pulling by boat apart to check mine because they are making a lot of ratteling noise in the exhaust. I was just going to remove them too.

Well I do not know anything about motors or anything especially marine motors but i just assumed it was the flapper not being there...... However the motor did seize because I tried to manually cranking it and didn't turn at all

The flappers only do 1 thing, keep water from rolling back into the motor if 1. It diesels and runs backwards or 2. keeps large waves from forcing water into the engine if the engine is off and the boat is still. I have never heard of not having them causing any issues. Newer Volvos do not have them at all. I seriously doubt your engine issues are due to a lack of flappers...more likely just coincidence.
