Temp range

Is it normal for a closed cooling engine to run hotter than a raw water cooled engine?
my engine with closed cooling(first closed cooling for me) runs around 190-195 degrees never more. it has new exhaust manifolds and risers. Antifreeze is new. not sure what degree thermostat it has.

No thats too high! It should be about 175. Impella could be going bad.

You will like the closed system. A lot easier to winterize!

Don't forget to change the zinc in the heat exchanger.

thanks for the advice, I will change it the impeller to be safe

is the zink a big deal even if I trailer this boat and flush after every use?

Typically with a 160* thermostat you should see temps between 160 and 175, it should not go over 185, if so you either have low raw water flow, or a partially clogged heat exchanger. So I'd be testing the raw water flow first, then check the thermostat. I think most closed systems use a 160 although it is possible that someone put a 180 or a 195 stat in there. Also if you can find out what brand of closed cooling system it is, call the manufacturer and ask them.

I would check the zinc every spring. It's about $8.00, and screws in at the top of the heat exchanger.

It was weird, when I got my boat my thermostat was bad so i just took it out. Boat would run 145-150 degrees but if you rode hard (cruise at 4000) it would actually overhead and you'd have to slow down to cool it. Overheat I mean upwards of 200 degrees.

Put in a new thermostat, no matter what I do to the boat.. 172-5.

I just picked up a new thermostat, impeller and later going to get the anode for the exchanger. I am also going to do a flow test of the cooler/exchanger to be safe. just going to cover all my bases to be safe. i also have a feeling the gauge is off. but I will bring my laser/pointer thermometer to check the temps at the different spots. mostly where the gauge sending unit is so I can see if the gauge is off.

well i dont know what fixed it but I replaced the old impeller( old one looked ok, so I kept it for a spare) replaced the thermostat. ran the boat for a while and I kept checking the temp with my laser/pointer thermometer and I wathed it go up to 163 degrees and then drop down to 148degrees about 6 times. so I am satisfied. the gauge at the helm was almost dead on. my thought is the thermostst wasnt opening completely.
I also put a new anode on the exchanger.
