My boat is a little difficult to get into reverse, although I have found it works better once it warms up. Is this normal ??

Bigger question is lost a rider while tubing, put the boat into neutral than went to back to forward and nothing. Tried 3 times and all the boat did was rev up but not go into gear. Has not happened again, but the Admiral thinks I need to take the boat in.

Shifter cable out of adjustment? I have no idea how to check though, I've read about people having that issue in the past.

The shift cable is either out of adjustment or stretched to the point of no return and may need to be replaced.

I would replace the shift cable. It is a somewhat known Four Winns issue. I replaced mine last year and it made a world of difference.

There should be a button center of the base of the shift lever at the pivot point that disengages the shift cable, but allows you move the throttle cable. Very useful for starting carburated engines and getting somebodies attention to drag race Seriously check and see if that is stuck in.

take the plactic cover off of the drive (the three 3/8 bolts)then shift into reverse and watch the shift mech and make sure it goes into gear fully then shift into forward and make sure it goes into gear as well. if you disconnect the cable you can manually shift the lever at the drive and see the full range of where it should go by turning the prop and feeling the lock. but sounds to me like a worn shift cable. cheap part anywhere from 30 to 45 bucks. and a pretty easy install.

Is that a FourWinns only part or is there aftermarket that are good. Not real pleased with the two dealers I have tried to deal with so far.

Mine is not going in to gear at the same time as the power is increasing. So it will rev up a little prior to actually going into gear, causing to really shift hard into gear.

The cable is not unique to FW, e.g. Teleflex Morse make them. The FW part numbers are on the FW website parts section for your boat. the FW number has 2 digits at the end, that is the length in feet ( the shifter is the longer of the two cables listed).

It's important to get the right type; mine (a 2004 boat) uses a standard 33C cable, threaded both ends. Earlier ones use the threaded end at the outdrive, a different end at the shifter. The TFXtreme cables give a much smother shift action than the cheaper ones. If you can get the cable type you need in the TFXtreme version, I'd recommend you get that rather than the standard one.
