So, I think it is a voltage regulator but just in case if anybody can help me out with different ideas of what it could be. I have an '87 Sundowner 195 with the 3.7 Merc.
I have the battery charged to 100% before we take it out (it is a good battery, it is tried and true), the engine starts and runs good then after about 10 minutes (give or take a couple minutes) it dies and won't restart because the battery is too low. It is a stator charge engine....hope the entire stator isnt kaput. Thank you!!!!

Test the voltage at the battery when you are running and see what it is or is not charging at. That will give you some idea of what is going on.

Ok, it's been a while but finally got around to messing with it. I was getting 12.8 at idle and 14ish giving it a little throttle (no tach, but guessing about 2K). Took battery out and had it load tested, it is good. I made a major rookie mistake; I checked my ground cables and noticed that a couple of the terminal ends were very rusted. I check continuity and it was very splotchy ie I had to move the probes around to get a beep and it was inconsitent. I replaced the terminal ends and VIOLA! So far, so good. I should have checked them before even starting this thread but, really thought about checking them when I noticed the positive terminal was rather warm when it was running. Honestly I didnt think of checking them until that point because, the problem was new and just figured that was good. I over-thought the whole thing.
Thanks for getting me thinking "back-to-basics"....
