Help serial number

Any help appreciated,I have just bought a 1997 Sundowner with a Volvo Penta 5.7GLi Engine.
I pick the boat up on Friday,I had a marine Engineer survey the Engine everything is good.
I asked him for the serial number and he sent it in his report.
Serial Number is T01304118

I have contacted several Volvo dealers and don't recongnise the number,so I contacted Four Winns and they told me the below.

The number is a OMC part number and not a true Volvo number. Omc went bust in 1999 and Volvo Penta bought the petrol engine range off OMC. OMC were the owners of Four Winns at the time.

Any thoughts

OMC went out of business?!?!?!?! No way!!!

Jk, that's common knowledge in the boat word. Whatcha need to know? You got a standard Volvo Penta engine/outdrive. 5.7GLi is throttle body fuel injected with 215hp. The outdrive is a VP SX. Parts are everywhere. The engine itself is a GM 350 small block.

The problem I have is when I go online to order parts or try to buy a manual it ask for the serial number,so when I input the Serial Number is T01304118.
Its not recognised.

I will wait till I pick the boat up on Friday and check for myself.

I have the same year boat. 5.7GLi is what Ric said. These years were a joint venture between OMC and V-P. Good news is that they are really just V-P parts.

What you really need to know is the model number of the engine.

The engine tag is on one of the engine valve covers. It will have a model number like 57FAPLKD. This will give you the info you need about parts.

The ""long life" plugs are Champion RS12PYP (= VP rebadged ones with 50% + mark up ) or original plugs AC 41-932. Interchangeable with the early ones ( RS12YC if I remember correctly)

PS We'll be out and about in our 2004 245 Sundowner (white/ red, named "Arosa" ) w/c 6th August for a week in the Holyhead/ West Anglesey area, we'll keep an eye out for you ! What colour is your new boat?

Personally I always use NGK iridium plugs. They last longer then anything VP put in originally, they just used copper crap until they got smart in the last 2-3 years and switched to platinum.

Remember,that's a Chevy 350 TBI from 1988 to 1995 pickup trucks/vans that Volvo Penta made some changes to so it works in a boat. Stuff like plugs you just run down to the auto parts store for.

Some items need to be coast guard certified so even though items such as starter/alternator will bolt on from the automotive version, the marine starter/alt has little screens in them to prevent sparks that could potentially ignite fuel vapors if you have a leak. Still, a starter is like $40.. alternator around $80.

I'm a parts cross reference guru, let me know what you need and I'll find it for you and help you to avoid ridiculous boat dealer prices as much as possible.

Example: Power steering pump from VP = $4-500. Real world? $40 bucks with lifetime warranty.

It isn't a VP thing; Mercruiser and VP were shipped the engines by the GM plant with the plugs already fitted. From something like 2002 they used the 41-932 platinum plugs. ( these were superceded by 41-993 platinums in something like 2006 and then by iridium ones ;41-101) My 2004 boat engine ( built in early Winter 2003) had the 41-932 plugs when I bought it (new); with GM black engine paint overspray, covered with red VP overspray on the plugs !

hahahahaha, yeah they get happy with that paint. Kind of annoying actually. It looks like a 5yo got happy and just covered the whole thing. For the price they charge for these engines maybe use a little masking tape?

I've always used the GM Delco Marine plugs in my 4.3, they work well and do not corrode easily so if you boat in salt water that's a concern. I put a bit of OMC triple guard grease around the threads and hex to keep salt air off. Never had one rust in place over 10 seasons of sitting on a salt water mooring for 6 months at a time. I don't think auto plugs would fare as well. Look up the GM Delco cross for your engine.

Quite honestly those are just a sales gimmick. You're working with dissimilar metals so no matter what there's going to be some kind of reaction between the plug and the engine that causes them to stick together. The best protection is to add some kind of compound to keep them from sticking that can survive the temps. I've always used http://www.neverseezproducts.com/antiseize.htm

They usually sell little foil containers of it at the sales counter at auto parts stores for $1 that's enough for 8 plugs.
