A few questions....some may be pretty basic as I am a new boat owner.

How often do you check the level?

How do you check it if you have your boat in a slip for the season and don't have a lift?

Am I correct in just removing the bolt on the top of the unit and the dip stick is on that?

Other ways to know if you are losing oil......i.e. obvious spots to see the oil?

This is a 2007 Volvo Penta 4.3 GXI 225 HP.

Thank you!

Every boat that I have owned and this one a 2007 5.7SI has the lube bottle on top of the engine. I have never owned a 4.3 so for all I know you may not have one on yours engine.

If you don't know when it was changed last, do it now. I would change it once a year. You want to look for metal & water (milky oil) in the old oil. I check mine ever 2 to 4 running hours with the engine oil. At the same timw I eye ball the engine. Look for anything out of place. Leaks, belt dust anything thats not right.

I have the oil and gear oil changed at winterization. I check before putting it in the water. The only way to check is at the top of the outdrive. I did notice that I have about 1 inch above water if it is calm. I really would like to check it monthly......... I have many options for pulling the boat up to sandy islands.

thx

To check it on the Volvo yes the screw in the middle of the top cap is really the dipstick. My Cobra is the same. I would not try doing it in the water though even if its well out of the water rest. What if someone comes along and makes a wake, LOL...

At the end of each season I always check for water in the drive lube. If I find any I take the drive off and take it to the mechanic. I do replace the gaskets for the drive fill and drain plugs every year. That helps keep water out. Water is heavier than oil so it will drop down to the bottom and come out first out of the drain.
