Put the boat up one weekend and all was well. Took it out the next weekend and the engine would not turn over. Ended up taking to a mechanic. They say the boat was turned off while still in gear and this is a big no no with Bravo one drives. Any truth to this?

When you went to start the boat again, if it was still in gear, the safety nuetral switch will prevent the starter motor from doing it's job. That's the only "no no" that I know of.

They claim that the Bravo drive will not go back to neutral even though you move the gear selector to the neutral position.

If this is in the design that would be a dumb idea, cause accedents do happen. I would think that the neutral safty switch could be bad. Or the throttle is not all the way in neutral. It would be like shutting your car off in gear, and trying to start it.

That does not make sense, what if the engine stalls in gear, you put it in neutral and it won't go in neutral?

I call BS, you should ask that "mechanic" what LouC said:

Then find another mechanic...

Actually that is dead on truth much of the time. I have seen people snap shift cables and control boxes trying to get a bravo out of gear when it is not running. Many times I have had to pull the boat and spin the prop while putting it back into neutral. The way the internal shift mechanism in a bravo works is much different than the alpha.

Not that I'm questioning your knowledge and experience Brian, but what if like LouC said, it stalls while in gear? Is there no other remedy besides pulling the drive? Doesn't sound right...

How did that get past the design department? Shut off boat in gear (common thing to do) will require a tow back to shore and a $500 mechanic bill. Another reason why I will never own a mercruiser.

Interesting.... The engine will not shut off unless it is in neutral on my new boat with BIII.... The most likely DTS is different from cable operation...

Isn't the problem still potentialy there though; if the engine stalls for whatever reason when it is in gear, the DTS (whatever that is !) would struggle against the B3 to put in into neutral. This is not meant as a Mercruiser "bashing" post, but it seems a strange design characteristic that if the B3 is in gear when the engine is stopped, it cannot be easily taken out of gear..

If it was had to take out of gear I would say somthing is up with the linkage. That just don't make any sense. In order to put it back in neutral you'd have to pull the drive and spin the prop? like one poster said that would e an expencive bill just to get it out of gear. I have heard of dealer only stuff, but DANG baby, that would get pricey.

Sometimes it will come out of gear easily, it just depends on the load on the gears when it stalls.
