I think the first thing to check is the anodes for sure. Pull one off to try and get a part number or metal type off of it (mine were hidden on the underside) if you can still make it out. I would also go through the exercise of checking for stray current at your slip, seeing as there is shore power there. I have no idea how it is done, but know it can be done. Maybe check with your marina manager or your dealer.

Good luck with your findings and getting your problem resolved. As a follow up to my corrosion woes, I am towing the boat to the dealer after work to have the drive changed. All parts are in!

They replaced my entire drive BUT.....my boat was brand new 25 ish hours fresh water all summer form may til september and i had the corrosion of a 5 year old boat. Volvo idicated it was a paint defect. Chris and I have the same drive same year boat and likely the same production lot since our corrsion was almost identical.

I know you guys had almost identical problems but I'm just wondering if anyone knows if this amount of corrosion is normal for a boat with only two seasons on it. My last boat had Merc drives, 4 years old and zero corrosion.
Just seems ood to me.

Pete

Thanks Mike, thats what I thought.
I'm trying to find out what anodes the boat was delivered with and I'm getting no replies from my x-dealer so I'm contacting FW.
Also will have to wait until docks are in the water and powered up before I can check for stray current.
Thanks to all for your help.
Cheers,

Pete

Pete, good luck with getting this resolved. I agree with Mike, it is not close to normal. I hope you get taken care of properly.

For what its worth - I called Four winns and Volvo and my dealer. I provided them all with the same pictures and info so we were all on the same page. I tried to express my concern for longevity and all the reasons I chose their product over others.

Good luck with your drive, I hope it works out like it did for chris and I.

Well I just came back from the marina and my 298 was definately delivered from the dealer with zinc anodes when VP clearly states magnesium for fresh water.
I guess the next step is to contact FW and VP about the corrosion problems.

chrisvs,
Could you forward me any contact numbers you have for Volvo Penta Canada please.
Thanks.

Pete

I did talk to Bill Kruger this morning.
He basicly said that its Volvo's problem and to contact my nearest VP dealer.
Also, that VP won't deal with warranty issues directly.... only through a dealer.
Dealer has been emailed.... no reply yet.

Pete

Without offending you, an email is so much easier to ignore and respond minimally to in this type of situation. I STRONGLY encourage you to get on the phone and talk to whomever it was that you emailed. It might take 20 emails exchanged to cover what you could cover in 10 minutes and feel more like it is being handled properly.

Agreed however, I wanted a initial paper trail to start and plan to then continue with phone calls.
No worries... no offense taken.

Cheers,

Pete

Sorry to take so long to get to you.

I spoke with Todd Koroll at Volvo Penta Canada. Volvo's number in Canada is (604) 872-7511.

I would agree to try through the dealer first, then push on to Volvo if you don't hear what you would like to hear. But definately press the issue to the dealer. Think of it this way, you (probably) paid a dealer prep charge, so if they did not make sure the anodes were the correct ones, then they didn't prep the boat properly!
