Ya gotta remember these are chevy/ford engines. Aside from a few coast guard approved parts they're all parts bin engines from the street cars. Volvo/mercruiser didn't make the engine, only the sterndrive.

I celebrated wayyyy too soon :x

I hadnt started my port engine in a few days, went to start it yesterday, back to square one. Engine cranked and cranked for at least 10 straight seconds. Let go of key, fuel pumps reprimed, tried again, start - go to 200 rpms or so, sputter, stall out. Try it again, starts up but doesnt "idle up" like it should. Just goes right to 500rpms and idles rough for a minute or so.

Darn it! I thought for sure I had solved it with the IAC. I replaced the ECT too.

Im going to look up the diagnostics for the ignition control module thats in the distributor. Ive been messaging somebody over on an Internet Boats forum with the same engine, same problem. Hes replaced everything that I have plus some. Neither of us have looked into the actual ignition side of the engine yet.

Oh! I did go to Radio Shack yesterday and bought a single LED bulb. Im going to use the paperclip & LED method to check my MEFI for stored codes. Info can be found on that here: http://bit.ly/Srt4tC

Bummer, have you taken off the throttle body and cleaned it, they can get really gunked up under the throttle plate esp if the PVC system sucks oil vapors in right at that spot.
My Toyotas (back in the late 80s) used to gunk up the underside of the throttle plate so bad the plate would stick shut, you could not push down the gas pedal on a cold engine unless you pushed really hard. I had to clean them at least once every 2 years. Never had this with the Jeeps or Subaru though....

Thanks for the reply Lou. I took off the spark arrestor yesterday and looked down in the TB, everything looked really really clean. ran sea-foam through the gas the last two tanks.

Im beginning to really think its the pickup coil in the distributor or the ignition control module.

Why not try this after a cold start, shut it off and look at the plugs right then. If they are wet and black looking, weak ignition is a good possibility....

Well, found a brand new OEM Volvo Penta ignition module on ebay for $50. Replaced it today and it started right up! Turned it off, started right back up again. Will know more this weekend if it fixed the problem because usually it takes a day or two of sitting to act up.

If that doesn't work, I'd throw a coolant temp sensor at it. If it's telling your ECM that your engine is at full operating temp, your ECM wont command the IAC to throttle up and the injectors to increase pulse width like they need to do for a cold start. Easy to change and located on the intake manifold close to the thermostat housing,,,,a 19 mm socket will get-er done.

Thanks John! I put a new coolant temperature sensor on about 2 weeks ago. It definitely smoothed out the idle but did nothing to stop my cold start problem :/

Im pretty sure/hoping the ignition module cures it. So far it looks promising  But I will post back with an update.
