Um, yeah. :( Do you have an IR temp gun? If so (and assuming your 'stat is back in and your temps seem to be right now), it would be a good idea to make sure your manifolds are roughly the same temp on both sides to rule out a blockage in at least one area.

If you don't have an IR gun, that should probably be the next thing on your never-ending list of boat stuff to buy.

The IR gun is a great tool, I have on I keep on the boat so I can check things now and then. I'd look for that impeller piece, could be in the hose to the thermo housing, or in the housing itself.

Even better, an IR camera ! Giving a downloaded image with the temperature indicated wherever the mouse was pointed. I used one at an industrial customer of mine recently; it clearly showed there were severe problems with the moulding tool heating. A bit expensive at ca USD 3,000 for home use though!

I'm pretty sure the impeller piece is not in the housing, but I wonder if it is not the reason that my boat was running cold before I removed the stat. Maybe it had the t-stat stuck open? I didn't see it when removing the t-stat, but I was not looking for it either. My dad cleaned the inside of the housing out with some sort of automotive tool, so if it was there, it's gone now. Pops owns an auto repair shop so I'm pretty sure he has an ir-thermometer. I will use it when I get it back up and running on the hose (hopefully tomorrow). Kid's little league championship game tomorrow night. Hoping to have time to get to the boat before that.

Good luck in the game! That's way more important than a damn boat anyway.

Pulled the housing today. The t-stat was definitely upside down. After looking more closely at how the water flows, it was clearly installed incorrectly. We just put it back in the way we removed it (or so we thought). Didn't really give it much thought at the time. I am still confused as to how it was running with the t-stat in upside down to begin with (unless dad and I are both crazy). Boat is new to me as of last summer so what ever work was done before was not done by me.

Anyway, regarding that impeller blade...take a look...

Found him hiding inside the one of the hose connections in the housing.

All pieces are now accounted for!

New t-stat should arrive any hour now. Can't wait to get it all back together. I am loving the learning experiences, but would much rather be floating. Thanks again for all your help! I will hopefully give closure to this discussion tomorrow!

Glad ya got it all fixed. Save that old impeller for an emergency spare. Only one vane missing, other than that, looks in ok/good shape.

I try hard not to disagree, but if the rubber in that impeller is brittle enough for one vane to break, then another won't be far behind. It has started to take a set and I'd be willing to bet it's the original. They're cheap enough to buy a 2nd one to have a good one as a spare (and then you don't have to wait for shipping the next time it's time to change it).

As to the found piece, congratulations, now go buy some lottery tickets. ;)

I hear ya, but that's why I said emergency spare. Def not something I would use in any other instance. Buy a new one for a real spare, coat that old one in petroleum jelly, throw it in a ziplock and keep it around for a just-in-case back up to the spare. 8)

THIS.

This turned out to be a very good thread. Figured out the thermostat issue AND a good lesson (or reminder) for everyone that you have got to account for missing impeller vanes or it will lead to trouble. They don't just eliminate themselves from the system.

Best thing you can do as a new backyard boat mechanic is to get a factory shop manual, it will help you make these repairs easily. Also, if you can find a local parts dealer, the can be helpful with general advice if you buy enough stuff from them.

Hey guys, she's back up and running. New t-stat installed (correctly this time). Overheat problem has been resolved. I thought the boat was running too cold, which is why I replaced the stat to begin with. I guess the gauge just reads a little low. I did not remember the running temp reading that low last season, but I guess I just didn't realize.

Image

IR thermometer read almost exactly 150* on the housing. New t-stat is a 150* stat, as was the old one (I was expecting a them to send a 160*). Manifolds read about 88* on the IR.

I do have a Seloc repair manual. It has been very helpful for many things already. For some reason, I did not reference it for the t-stat replacement, I guess because I figured I just know how to do it.

The one boat dealership near me is a complete ripoff. Would not even give me a price on the stat over the phone. I refuse to go to them. I found a local boat repair guy that seems to be pretty decent and helpful.

Thanks again for all of your help! Hopefully the next pics I post will be of the family having fun on the boat! Off to the US Open Saturday, hopefully hit the river on Sunday.

PS
My son's LL team did win that championship game!

Congrats on the game, and great pic!

I would definitely think that should be a 160* thermostat though.

That is what I was expecting too, but the one I removed (which I assume was original) is a 150*. The new stat was ordered by the boat shop up the street. I was in the office with the mechanic when he was on the phone ordering the stat. I am pretty sure he even said 160* when talking to the parts supplier, but it arrived as a 150. Quick search on the interweb found a couple of listings of Volvo Penta Part number 3587597 as a 150*, but most retailers don't list the temperature rating. Maybe they changed the temp rating in recent years?

I definitely have the right part number:

Kind of frustrating.
