Well, if it's made of brass, then it should last a long time. The nice thing about a plug with a hole drilled is that one can just replace the plug if one finds the hole too large. Plus a plug is cheap.

I looked at what Aqualarm has in terms of raw water flow sensors and exhaust temp alarms. I think either one of these, or both, will have you covered. The flow sensor alarms when raw water flow is interrupted like a flow sensor in a pool system and the exhaust temp sensor alarms at 200*F
