According to Mobil's web site, M1 10W40 is indeed gone.

I believe I'll be using M1 15W50 from now on, which is stocked at my local WalMart.

Mike...

Do you think the 50W is going to be too heavy for your engine? I was under the impression they called for straight 30W or an xW40.

Just curious as I may follow suite with my Mercruiser 350 MPI.

Hi Bob,

Well, the "new" spec from Volvo is part #3809429 (1L) or #3809428 (5L) Synthetic 15W-50 (rating API SJ, ACEA A3/B3). So apparently their oil of the month is now 15W-50.

For years Volvo's spec was straight 30W synthetic, which they re-labeled from Amzoil. They stopped making it and it's now pretty hard to find. So Volvo changed the spec.

I haven't kept up with Merc's oil specs but as we know, the engines are the same except for the paint color.

Thoughts on Mobil 1 High Mileage which appears to be available in 10W40?

I changed this year from straight 30w to Merc 25-40 due to comments above, but have yet to get out on the water to see what the oil pressure readings are.

Small exerpt from Mercury on comparison to 15-50, but can't find the link to the chart they discuss.

After many years of using Mobil 1 15W-50 in my 454 engines I switched to Mobil 1 10W-40 high mileage during the fall of 2016 oil change. The reason for the switch was that at times I thought my oil pressure was higher than it should have been.

I'm no expert, but if you want to go 10W40 I wouldn't not use it. I'm not convinced it isn't the same as M1 in a different bottle.

Thats a lot of negatives for just two sentences...

Well then, I won't not consider it...

Could always stick with start 30W, I guess:

I am not not confused.

Regarding "High Mileage" oil: My understanding is that they have additional additives to condition seals/reduce or stop leaks. Also to reduce sludge, prevent wear, etc (just like every other oil claims to do). I think if you don't have actual oil leaks and are not burning oil, you probably don't need to pay extra for High Mileage oil... but it shouldn't hurt anything. They claim to be fine for new engines too.

I have used everything from 15/50, 15/40, 10/40, even 10/30 (Heavy Duty diesel oil). Conventional, semi-synthetic, and full synthetic. I might have noticed better gas mileage on the full synthetic, but because its so hard to determine that, I never really pursued the actual figures.

This year I am using..... <gasp> full synthetic Shell Rotella T6 5w/40 in my twin 4.3 engines  :)

I'd love to see an oil analysis report targeting viscosity if you're pouring a 5w40 in there!
Oils with a large viscosity range use a large amount of VI Improvers, which shear at a faster rate.
This is why Mercruiser still use their 25w40.
I'd personally never use anything thinner than a 15w40 in any marine application.
It's still >30c down in Australia & I'm currently using a high ZDDP, 20w60! 8)

Do I dare poke the bear to see where you all get your oil filters?

That 5w/40 I believe is a Syn base oil so it should not need much in the way of VI improvers....
I like to stick with the Merc 25/40 oil because it has been formulated and tested on the kind of engines that most have on this forum; ie sterndrives with no engine oil cooler. Research I have done suggests that marinizers that do not recommend a straight weight but a more common multi Vis are doing so with engines that have engine oil coolers.
As I usually say run what you want but if you are running something the manufacturer did not recommend (let's not forget their recommendations are based on testing and supporting warrantees) then you owe it to yourself to spend $25 or so and do a Blackstone oil analysis. This way you are not guessing. I did this with the Merc oil and found it held up as well if not better than the Delo 400 straight 30 or 40 I used to use....

Oil filters I use either a Merc filter or Sierra, due to the better corrosion resistence in a salt water environment....

Almost every mineral/ synthetic base stock will require VI Improvers. The wider the vis' range, the more is required.
Some PAO & Ester based performance oils can blend with no VI Improvers, but the vis' range is quite narrow.
VI Improvers will break down with load, as well as heat. Marine engines are like a car engine permanently on a dyno!

I just use Volvo filters and order them when I order other parts.
