Jim,
You've got the later retainer which is the black painted rod that slots into the impeller housing and it looks like it doesn't need to be removed to take the impeller cover off, as it locates from behind the pump..
The earlier ones, like mine, were a thick plate metal bracket which located (via a rubber moulding) between the inlet and outlet. This came in from the front of the pump and the whole bracket had to be removed to get the cover off.
