Bad guess by me. Sorry. I should have looked it up. My Bad.

Quote:
Our high flow cotton gauze air filter is washable, reusable and built to last for the life of an automotive or motorcycle engine. K&N air filters consist of four to six sheets of cotton gauze layered between two sheets of aluminum wire mesh. This media is then pleated and oiled to enhance its filtering capabilities and overall performance.

So Dave, did you get one from the seller?

I emailed tech suport to see if the elements are constructed the same. We'll go from there and build a top and bottom plate for the 5.7 GXI

Reply about the K&N filter elements:

"Hello Jeff,

Thank you for your interest in K&N products. The product is the same, however will not have the Coast Guard Approval on the air filter. If you have any further questions please call our Customer Support at 1(800)858-3333. Have a great day."

I'm picking it up tomorrow morning. For $50 I'm not to worried if it helps or not. I have a gut feeling I'm going to like it. It just feels/sounds like my motor is starving for air. I guess I'll know soon.

Marc, As for the fit, My GSI motor has the air filter on the front unlike your GI. See Pix.

Well I got it and now I have to wait to get my boat out of storage to try it. The bottom of the unit is all open so I'm curious to how it is going to fit into my motor. I'm not sure if there is a plate to mount it on or not. I may dig into the K&N site a bit more to see if I need a mounting kit. It seems REALLY big, but if it fits, my worries about enough air are going to go away. Now I curious if the ECU is smart enough to recognize the motor is getting more air into it....

I have owned merc, OMC, and now Volvo, none of them has ever had an air filter. I believe there thought is, your out on the water, there is no dust for the motor to ever see.

St. Louis Dave,

Can you post a photo of the K&N? Does it mount in place of the stock spark arrestor? or on top of it. I am just picturing a filter element added to the stock arrestor, if this is the case we would not see any improvement of air flow, just filtered air.
I would like some sort of air filter element added to the motor since volvo does not use any.

I'll get pix in a couple of weeks once the boat is out of storage.

Be aware that it is a violation of coast guard regs to not have an approved flame arrestor on the engine. This is probably why K&N told you they didn't have anything available, and made the point to mention coast guard approval (and lack thereof). If for some reason the engine backfires you really DO NOT want to risk starting a fire in the engine compartment.

Did anyone ever get one AND install it yet? I'm all for getting one, just not sure how to order it: I didn't see my engine on that list. Mine is a VP 5.7Gi. It is fuel injected. I wish they would just have a list like they do with cars. I have a 2007 Lexus IS350. I told them that, and they sent me a filter for it. Easy. Why can't I say I have a 200SS with VP 5.7Gi and they would send me what I need?

Two big reasons, variations between makes and models, and Coast Guard certification (which is not inexpensive to obtain).

Boats rarely have the same level of consistency in parts as automobiles. These aren't cars and almost nothing about them compares. The only thing boats have in common with road going vehicles is they both burn fuel. There's nearly nothing in common beyond that. Not in manufacturing, delivery, parts, service or even operation. And certainly not in sales volume.

That and unlike a car, a 200x boat might not have a 200x engine. It might be an engine from the previous *engine maker* model year. Or the boat might be the boat maker's previous year with this year's new model engine. Not something you see on production cars, at least not often.

Anyone else happen to notice the print on the box in that pic?

And you want to put that in your boat? :!: :!: :!:

I'm not trying to insult you or your intelligence, but PLEASE don't do that. I don't want to read about you in a sad article.
