Thanks. I have to admit I have somewhat of an obssessive compulsive perfectionist disorder when it comes to the boat so I was happy to do the work. Maybe next winter I''l take a stab at stripping them completely and repainting by doing the whole process. I guess it will depend on how well they hold up this year. My service guy told me mine were in a lot better shape than most others that he pulled due to being painted even if they seem to be unsightly. Honestly, I think its a good thing they were painted but I hated how the previous owner ignored the border on the hull, used a brush and had it slapped all over the braided lines and under the swim platform. Anyway, I may post some pics after its been in the water for awhile and I've hauled it.

Thinking about this again...here where the fouling is really BAD...many do brush it on because spraying does not give a good enough coating for it to work long enough if the boat is left in the water all season...I'll tell you this is the main reason why I would not get another I/O...I like the simple and cheap to replace Chevy power plant and I don't have a problem with maintaining a sterndrive but the marine growth issue is a MAJOR drawback...back when the tin paints were legal it wasn't so bad but now outboards are the best in smaller boats...especially now that I/Os will be saddled with the expense of Cat converters...that brings the price closer to OB power....

Nope. Fresh water and have the ability to clean it up occassionally by pulling it out on a trailer.

You guys would not believe how bad salt water drives look if left in the water EVEN with the antifouling paints...barnacles all up in the pivot housing..around the bellows...everywhere...if it's a bad fouling area...the thing is some areas in the salt are not bad for fouling and some are...where I am is BAD...so this year I am brushing it on..and going to try something new on the bellows (coating with triple guard grease) to keep stuff from growing on it....I don't think regular anti fouling paint would stay on the bellows...but I might also try anti fouling for inflatable boats....problem is it has copper in it (not good near aluminum)....

Walter- very little actually got down to bare aluminum. Only a few spots here and there. All I did this time was clean with rubbing alcohol. Then primed them. Ive had it out of the water a few times and they look ok. Not shiny black and more and some paint flaking off but not the primer. That seems to be holding up. I think the flaking may be due to the prior coat of anti-fouling not being removed completely in places.
