No ! the hull on the right hand side of the drive ( starboard side) is obscuring it, it's on the transom shield, the outdrive part that's attached directly to the transom

Thanks guys. I found it last night. Of course there is not enough space to get the zerk fitting of the gun on it with the hull right next to it. Picked up a 90 degree coupling for my grease gun.

Question is do I grease and test to see if the louder noise at full turn us gone or just pull the stern drive and inspect everthing and put a new gimball on? I am leaning towards the new gimball and then I know everything is in good shape inside.

If it's noisy due to lack of greasing over the years, then it's probably worn as well. It doesn't do any harm I suppose to grease it and see whether the noise goes away!

Was never noisy until I pulled it out after sitting from the end of Dec to mid April. Noticed the sound was a bit louder and noisy on turns, normal going straight at speed and idle.

Might try greasing and running to the ramp and take it for a quick spin in the river and see.

As tough as it is to get to that zerk grease fitting (due to my hull), I am guessing it was not greased unless the dealer serviced it for the prior owner.

If it was not noisey until you pulled it out of storage it's possible there was water in the bellows which may have rusted the gimble and ujoints...so I'd consider pulling off the drive and checking all that now so you don't have a failure during the season...

I agree with Lou; if it got noisy after sitting in water for 4 months, there may well be water in there, you need to check and if there is/ was, find out why (bellows, 6 nuts not tightened up properly); then remedy any damage before it does something MUCH worse!

Nope. Sitting on a trailer under a carport from DEC - Apr. Last time in water was in fresh water (though normally use it in salt). I never leave the boat in the water. Flush the engine after every use and wash the boat and trailer down after every use.

My misunderstanding; when you wrote you pulled it out, I assumed you meant you pulled it out of the water. If there was water in there for 4 months, even a small amount, as Lou wrote it could have rusted things. If it was my boat, I really would be tempted to pull the drive for a look (my original, factory fit bellows had a little water in them after the first 6 months in salt water; I was very lucky ( or rather, the dealer/ FW was very lucky, as the boat was still under warranty), in my case it must have gotten in quite late on. Even so, the outside of the U'Js and input shaft had some surface rust, not enough to warrant changing them. The factory hadn't used any gasket sealing compound on the bellows like VP recommend.

The noise on turns and not straight on sounds more like the U/js, as when turning the U/Js are working through a tighter angle.

I have everything undone but cannot get the stern off. It's about half way on the 6 bolts but just will not slide off. Any recommendations? Followed the workshop manual steps.

You might trying rocking it a bit. When I pulled mine it took two of us to get it off. You might need to call a Bubba friend. Getting it back on was even tougher.

Is the shift cable disconnected? There is nothing else mechanically connecting the outdrive to the tilt housing. If it's come off that far, the splines on the input shaft can't be seized in the coupler. Maybe the input shaft is seized to the gimbal bearing as you suggest. At the risk of getting comments, you could try moving it in and out to try to break it free.

Will it slide back in? I hesitate to mention this for the howl of protest it will bring, but when we were re-installing mine it stopped moving about where you are now. To finish the job we had to place a section of 4x4 across the drive frame (with the shift cover removed) and whack it into place with a hammer. This was my first and the guy who was helping me had done many, albeit all Mercurys. I would have been stuck without his help and would have NEVER thought to bash it into place.

Anyway if it is stuck both ways you might consider a little gentle persuasion just to free it up and then try pulling again.

I never had a lick of trouble out of my drive after that and man was that new bearing quiet.

Even if you don't leave it in the water...if the bellows had a leak water would get in from just having it in the water...so it's good that you are checking it...hope you get the drive off...I have never had a Volvo SX but as noted about the only things that could hang it up is if you didn't disconnect the shift cable.... or if there is corrosion on the drive shaft where it passes through the gimble bearing...I'd try to push it in and then rock it out repeatedly to break it loose GENTLY...

With my Cobra I have never had a problem getting it off...getting it back ON sometimes can be a challenge...
