I've got a gallon of glycerine in my garage; I need it in my job ( no, I don't make icing for cakes!). To me it seemed almost criminal, last week due to business rules we scrapped a 6 month old 40 gallon drum of glycerine because it was beyond it's official shelf life; in reality, it doesn't degrade appreciably in over 3 years!

I think the transport cost for the 40 gallons from the Uk to the US may be prohibitive! What a waste though.

Ok so I changed the impeller. It took me about an hour and a half. But most of it was from me never changing it before. I think the next time it will be alot easier, know that I know how to do it. Ok so when I got my impeller out it looked to be in perfect condition. I kept it as a spare, but am still wondering what the proper operating temperature is. When underpower it runs at about 175 degrees. The line in the middle of the gauge is 150 degrees and its always a little higher than that. The highest temp is 3 notches more at 240. It has never gotten that hot. If I stop the temperature goes up to about 195. As soon as I start moving again it goes back down to the 175. I think that hottest it has ever gotten was about 200. Is this normal for the temperature to go up and down so much? I'm just wondering now if I should replace the thermostat or the water pump. I did put the muffs on it and start it on the trailer. It ran right at 175 degrees the whole time. I tried idling up to about 1500 for a few min and it went up a little to about 180/190. Should I be worried and dig a little more into it. THANKS NEIL

I think that is still too hot if it's an open raw water cooled system....keep in mind that a raw water cooled open system is not pressurized like a closed system with a heat exchanger. That means that you can get localized boiling in hotter parts of the engine if your temp gauge is reading 200. In a closed system the 15 psi pressure cap raises the boiling point of the coolant up to 265 degrees so that's why those systems can run hotter safely. I'd keep looking for a reason for it to heat up when the rpms are low...did you replace all the parts in the impeller such as the wear plate? If this is not replaced sometimes the engine will run hot like that. My old '88 4.3 V-6 Cobra runs at 160 pretty much all the time. I can tell when the thermostat is getting sticky because then the engine will run cooler until you run the boat on plane and it will run a little hotter (maybe 10*) after you come off plane for a minute and then cool down to like 120. When I replace the thermostat it goes back to a steady 160*.

I'm going to go ahead and change the thermostat, I cant imagine it costing that much, and its right on top of the engine. If this doesn't correct the problem, I will just have to take it somewhere.

Update: I just changed the thermostat, and that seemed to be the problem. It ran w/ the muffs on last night for about 40 min and the temp never went above 150 degrees where as after I changed the impeller and ran it, it immediatly went over 160. Thanks everyone for there suggestions/help! Neil
