I notice that it looks like there is duct tape on the tip of the bracket that keeps the pump from spinning. There is supposed to be a rubber block "Stop Lug" that slips over the end of the bracket. You might want to order that part while you are replacing the pump.

"Stop Lug", P/N 3857954 $11.05 at http://www.volvopentastore.com/Cooling/dm/cart_id.717055824--session_id.518146499--store_id.366--view_id.775929

EDIT: Oops. I missed that this was a 3 year old post.

I made the post on how to rebuild the raw water pump, including replacing bearing and seal. I just rebuilt the photo links, so the photos should be OK now.

Here is the link: http://www.smwebhead.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=12060&p=112826#p112826

Thanks for posting that. I'm going to replace the entire pump assembly (I hope, never done it before) but as suggested above I'll keep the old one and can maybe rebuild it as a spare.

You might change your mind after seeing the price tag on a new pump assembly. Like rpengr, I rebuilt mine and it has worked great since, no leaks. Annnnd it only cost about $6-7 bucks.

Yes, totally unnecessary to replace the pump unless the shaft is worm, in which case there would have been a huge amount of water spraying around.

In my case, despite detecting the leak very early on, the salt water leak caused a lot of surface corrosion and I had to repaint the whole pump and pulley ( using an old aerosol can of BMW red from the 1980's was a very good match, I always knew it'd come in useful one day !)

............ and re the rubber tip on the bracket, I lost it on my 1999 5.7GSi; black rubber, black engine. I found it eventually after a few frustrating hours searching, . On my 2004 GXi I used 3M 4200 to bond it to the metal bracket; it never came off again.

I get the same drip, drip, drip, but only when running on the hose. It seems the forced water into the impeller causes the drip. I guess I should probably check my bearing and seal in the near future too...

It sounds to me like your leak is at the O-ring, in a position where it is near the suction side of the impeller rotation. So it is probably letting air bubbles in when you are not on the hose. Probably not a big deal, could wait until your next impeller change.

Thanks! I will keep an eye on it and if it does not worsen, address it in the fall when I change the impeller.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that helped. I got the pump changed out last week and everything ran great all weekend.

Thanks for pointing that out, and I did order a new one. The old one was almost completely melted in to like a gum. It was super messy and got everywhere. It was a giant PITA to clean it up.
