transom?
I ran my boat for 2 seasons with a rotten deck and stringers, yes even out in LI Sound, course I did not know the stringers were bad. I had one bad spot under the helm seat I fixed back in 03, then in 05 when I was winterizing it, I heard a crunch when I stepped on the area under the rear seat, the whole aft section of the deck under the rear seat was shot. I cut out the bad stuff in the spring of 05 and dug out the foam. I saw the bad stringers and decided I did not want to do that much grinding, even with the P-100 filters on the 3M respirator. So I got the 'glass shop to fix the stringers. Then I reinstalled the foam, installed 2 new deck sections, made new mounts for the gas tank (all but one rotted off!) and made a new cover for the gas tank. I decided I did not want carpet any longer so I had the 'glass shop glass the new deck in non skid gelcoat. Much better than carpet over plywood. Lucky for me the transom and engine mounts were still OK. If you do have to replace a transom, check out friscoboater's job on the 95 Sea Ray on iboats, he did a great job and is good at showing how he did it. If it weren't for the toxic nature of fiberglass dust, I would have done more on this job but I did not think it was worth the health risks....

I cored it (transom) and found some dampness, not as bad as I've seen, not gone to peat-moss yet but the mositures there, or was anyways.
Funny thing about the boat is the deck has been replaced, it has been glassed with CSM and is solid as a rock, now ,did they do the stringers or just do some sistering, I cannot tell at this point. The stringers at the engine are orginal and drill good. I think it will be fine for the season, then I'll dive-in fallish. I have seen Jays threads on Iboats.
