Hi, I was wondering if you are suppose to use a sealant on the manifold and riser gaskets or do they just get installed without it.
Thanks!

Just checked my risers the other week. After almost 6 years in salt water, still looking pretty good - I flush out with Salt Away after each use. Just a poke around the passages with a screwdriver, vacuum out the debris, clean the gasket surfaces them put them back on.

Used the genuine VP steel shim riser gaskets (at great expense!) along with the Permatex copper spray as a sealant as per the latest VP installation instructions. I figured stick with VP all the way...

Stick with the manufacturer's recommended methods. Some recommend doing nothing other than prepping the machined surface and using the factory gaskets. As in, manifolds are often shipped with the mating surfaces covered in paint. This to prevent them from rusting up while in the package. You have to remove this before installing them. Usually with acetone, rags and a lot of elbow grease. You do NOT want to scrape or otherwise nick the machine surface.

If you're not sure then pick up the phone and call the vendor directly.

I boat in salt water -- manifolds and risers do not last a long time here in Florida.
I replaced mine with GLM about two years ago -- no issues.

I had heard of the riser flange issues on GLM --so I filed mine nice and flat before installation. It was easy to do --and no issues.

My original Volvo riser gaskets failed and I lost some valve seats (forcing me to do an upper end rebuild) -- I am not a fan of the metal gaskets alone -- I see now they are recommending a copper sealant which make a lot more sense to me.

Dale,

Welcome back; nothing heard from you for a while !

I recently replaced the riser gaskets on my engine using a copper based gasket concoction to fit them as per VP service bulletin ( after just a routine check), No corrosion to note, the Neutrasalt system seems to work well; on my 8th season in ( admittedly cold) salt water use.
