It may have been mentioned before during this long string, but just a reminder that there is a Volvo Penta service bulletin (P-44-1-1) covering anodes for SX and DP drives. It explains how they are shipped from V-P and what anodes should be used in salt and fresh water. You can find the bulletin on the V-P site (volvopentastore.com) under Drive (lower unit). It's kind of buried in the parts list, but you will find it if you look.

UPDATE.
Well I just back from the Toronto Boat Show where I talked to my Volvo Penta rep. He told me that they have completed all testing on my drives and plan to remove and repair them this spring under warranty.
Now heres a company that goes above and beyond. It was clearly the FW's dealers fault for delivering the boat with incorrect anodes yet VP still stands behind their product and covers the cost of repair.
Needless to say, I won't be returning to that FW's dealer when it comes time to move up... or for any other reason.
Here's hoping for an early spring. :D
Cheers,

Pete

Aluminum by its nature is notoriously difficult to paint so the paint will stay on because it oxidizes almost instantly in the air. Getting the paint to stay on it is a labor intensive multi step process. Here in salt water land there is no such thing as an outdrive (unless dry stored) that has no corrosion. Having said that, my old Cobra has held up surprisingly well, they must have used a good quality of aluminum alloy on these.
But for sure I can understand why, some will not have an IO if stored in the water, outboard only for many here. I continue to keep the IO because of it's simpler nature vs modern outboards. Getting the drive prepped and painted with anti fouling paint so it will las the season is a LOT of work, probably a good day and a half at least.

Update - the second full season of the new drive shows no corrosion at all. Seems they fixed the "paint issue"

How are the rest of you guys doing with your corrosion troubles?

Our drive has been excellent as well. Just pulled the boat on the weekend, no signs of corrosion.

Looks like problem solved!

I found this tread and had a few questions to those with past issues. I have a 2007 that is 1 year out of warranty. I noticed this year when I was cleaning that my VP DP drive has quite a lot of corrosion. I pulled the anodes and one was Zinc and one was Aluminum. I took delivery from a dealer on fresh water and they know that I operate on the same lake. I called the dealer and told them I was having issues and explained that I researched the matter to check the anodes and they aggreed that I should have Magnesium. I went back to the dealer and they charged me $97 for the 2 anodes. I paid, put them on myself and launched. I later thought to myself, why did I pay for them and why didn't I ask for assistance with the corrosion on the drive. Any suggestions or comments?

That's bad corrosion. I'd start the process of trying to get them to take care of it. Volvo knows there's a problem with these.

One Zn and one Al? Criminy. Not that that could've done this, but what were they thinking?

Agreed.... Volvo does know that theres a problem here and you should contact their head office.
Your corrosion certainly looks as bad as mine was and they repaired both drives at 'no charge' to me.

Oh and by the way, I checked the condition of my drives when we launched this weekend and after 6 months in the water last season, I'm happy to say that both are absolutely clean of corrosion now that the proper anodes are installed. :D :D :D :D :D
