That's very interesting. The part number on your thermostat is the same as mine, yet I know for a fact that mine is 160. In fact, I think I've got a spare at home, I'll pull it out tonight and see what it says.

It makes a difference where on the housing you take your reading. I found that the top of the Thermo housing reads lower than the gauge. The spot that gives me the closest to the gauge reading is the intake manifold right under the Thermo housing. That gives me a reading very close to the temp gauge (gauge 160-165, intake 155-160).

Now I'm really stumped. I bought this a few years ago to keep on hand.

If I'm not mistaken isn't the saltwater Therm supposed to be a little cooler to prevent crystalization of salt? Seems I read that somewhere.

The thermostat in "raw water" cooled engines is "cooler" to try to reduce solids build up in salt and hard water operating environments. The same thermostat is used for both salt and fresh water use though. "Fresh water cooled" (closed cooling system) engines use a "hotter" thermostat, as they use an antifreeze/ water mix as the coolant.

The lower temp thermostat in salt is something I've heard for years, I think for sure for certain Mercruisers both a 140 and a 160 were available. However, I've looked high and low and have never seen 140s available for OMC/Volvo engines. I've always used the standard 160 stat and the only overheating issues I have had, have been from impellers that had taken a 'set' and did not pump that well, and mostly barnacle build up in the water intake area in the lower outdrive. What I'm now adding to my maintenance schedule is every other year to split the upper and lower units and scrape the barnacles out of that area and paint that area with anti fouling paint.
Graham if you ever run into a low raw water issue you might want to take a look at that. Depending on your fouling conditions, it can be pretty bad. Splitting the drive (and this applies to the Volvo SX as much as the OMC Cobra because the design in how they go together is very similar) can be difficult for 2 reasons. One, the bolts can seize in place unless they get backed out, cleaned off and coated with OMC gasket sealer or similar every few seasons. The other, is that salt deposits will build up under one of the 3 "O" rings that seal the upper and lower drive housings and make it well nigh impossible to get them apart. I came up with a little trick for this in case you ever need to do it ;)

There's a 140 in my Mercruiser. Wouldn't mind swapping it out for a 160 for better economy.

Lou,

I'll keep an eye out for that. Interestingly, the lower unit on my 2004 drive has fewer but much bigger inlet holes for the cooling water than on my 1999 drive ( I still have a damaged 1999 duoprop lower unit in my garage to compare the 2004 drive with, no idea what to do with it !). Maybe they recognised there was a potential issue due to marine growth.

Just ran the boat for the first time with the new impeller and t-stat. Glad to see that 150 is in fact the standard for the raw water cooled volvos. I was worried that I had the wrong part. This all started with the boat running cool. Today with the new stat, it ran about 10* warmer than with my old 150* stat. I am guessing that my old one was due for replacement. Anyway, boat ran great and my family and I had a fun Father's Day on the river.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there!

Sounds good, thanks for the follow up.
Graham, the older Volvos and Mercs both had more bout smaller holes for the water intakes. The Cobra has 4 large holes. It also had an internal water screen like a Johnson or Evinrude lower unit (which it is very similar to). The perblem I had was barnacles growing on the inside of this screen. When I split the drive I yanked that screen out and painted the inside of the water intakes with Trilux.
