Quite: I could try pulling the carb, but it has been a long time since I have done that and I am trying to get it running for Memorial Day.

Stupid question for you and for give me. It been a long time from my 69 Camaro days in the 70s. A rebuilt carb with core credit is $90 to $100. Plus 4 bolts, fuel line, arm/links & a gasket, 45min of work. From the link, it starts, fuel is getting there, yes?

LOL @ Ric!

Well we have a big group going for the weekend at a place on the water and multiple boats. If mine is not running, some people will have to stay back on shore and that is not fun with kids all wanting to go tubing!

139 - double checking the spark when doing this other work, but believe so.

Ignition module did not solve it. Friend came over to assist and read through the posts and suggested the same as some others here that the carb probably needed to be re-built. He felt there was a lot of fuel in there when we took it off. Also, before pulling it off, we had a blast of fire out of the carb and he felt it was aback fire and burning off the excess fuel.

I was thinking the plugs would have been wet had there been too much fuel, but they were not, though when I changed them Monday, we had only tried to start it a couple of it,es and then changed them, so maybe not much fuel had a chance to get in there.

So we took the carb off and I dropped it at a shop to redo. Hoping I can get it back tomorrow.

He said swapping the ignition pick up would be an issue as I could get the timing screwed up, so I held off on it. I am debating putting in the new coil and new fuel pump tonight since I have the parts and that will eliminate those as potential sources of the problem.

Did the ignition pick up or the coil fail the diagnostic test procedures? If they tested ok they shouldn't need to be replaced. If it's fuel related I'm still suprised it didn't run off the starting fluid behind sprayed down the throat while running. Usually a car with a dead fuel pump will keep running as long as you keep spraying. I've actually walked cars into the shop from the parking lot many times by walking along side and spraying carb spray while someone drives.

We sprayed starting fluid and put gas in the carb and it would not stay running. Cranks and sounds like it is starting and then dies.

Return the fuel pump - not your problem. Hold onto the coil as it *may* be the issue if you get the catb back and all is not well

PDACPA, did you get your boat running or did that gov't mandated piss water ruin your Memorial Day weekend?

Ethanol Causes 70% of Spring Repairs

http://www.boattest.com/resources/view_ ... ewsID=3465

This spring there was trouble in River City, as in St. Cloud, Minnesota, home of three of the largest boat builders in America – Glastron, Larson, and Crestliner. But the trouble had nothing to do with the boats, but rather with the fuel being sold to run their engines. Again the culprit was ethanol in the fuel, a complaint that we hear about every spring and it seems to do what is commonly called E10. Recently an article was published in the St. Cloud Times interviewing three service techs working in the marine industry.

BY JAMIE HUGHES • ST. CLOUD TIMES • JUNE 12, 2009

Rob Gleason, service manager of Bee Line Yamaha Super Store in St. Joseph, said 70 to 75 percent of the boats they see at the beginning of the boating season are coming in for a carburetor cleaning due to buildup from oxygenated fuels. Oxygenated fuels include substances such as ethanol and biodiesel and contain oxygen, usually intended to reduce carbon emissions.

He said if a boat is left idle for more than three weeks with an oxygenated fuel such as E10 in the tank, the fuel begins to break down faster, separate and plug up parts such as jets and injectors.

The buildup can restrict gas flow and cause lean conditions, which makes cooling the engine difficult, he said. “That’s when you get a chance of breaking down,” he said.

Gleason said the best way to run a boat is to use a nonoxygenated fuel but said the trick is finding a place that sells it.

“(I’ve) yet to find a standard pump gas that doesn’t break down,” he said. Gleason said even premium pump fuels begin to break down within 30 days.

PWC Dealer Says…

Joe Shimota, boat manager at Bristow’s Kawasaki and Polaris Inc., said there’s a difference between using an ethanol-blend fuel for a car and for a boat because cars typically don’t stand idle for weeks or months. “You’ve just got to have good fuel for these things,” he said. “It’s not a car you drive every day.”

The cost of improperly storing a boat can vary.

Gleason said it can cost anywhere from $75 to $275 to repair the damage from storing boats with oxygenated fuels, if all the parts on the boat are in good condition.

A Third Dealer Says…

Chuck Merten, service manager at Richmond Marine and Sports in Richmond, said depending on the size of the engine and the amount of damage or buildup, owners could spend up to $5,000.

Realistically, owners should never use oxygenated fuels for boats, but most will be fine as long as they’re being used, Gleason said.

“(If you) decide not to use it much, that’s when you get in trouble,” he said. But there are a few things boat owners can do if they know their boat is going to be idle for a while.

Merten said to buy as little fuel as needed and use it up before storing or refueling. Gleason said owners should drain the carburetors on their boats and add fuel stabilizers, but not to use Sea Foam as a stabilizer.

“Most people don’t listen and we see them back here in six months,” he said.

It does not run on carb cleaner, that points to ignition as a possible source. You said the old plugs were bad, how so? Just worn with wide gaps or fouled like they weren't firing well (dark almost black deposits on the insulator tip)? Get a spark tester and check each one at the wire, or make a spark tester with a new spark plug, properly gapped. Take 2 big alligator clips and attach a wire to each end. Pull off each spark plug wire, put the spare plug in the wire end, then ground the plug by clipping one alligator clip to the plug threads and the other to a good engine ground. Get someone to crank it over and look for a good hot whitish-blue spark. DO NOT hold the plug in your hand or you will get a wicked shock. If no spark or weak spark, then you have to look at the cap, rotor and ignition module.

If you do get a good spark, it may be time to check the fuel pump pressure and output and the carb may need to be cleaned, and put back together with new gaskets. Is your choke closing with a cold engine, it looks rusty to me. With a cold engine the choke should close all the way when you fully open the throttle. When it starts, the choke should be pulled open a fraction by a vaccum operated mechanism (choke pull off it's called somtimes). If not it will not start from cold easily. Then as the engine warms the choke should open.

You have to start with logical problem areas and then eliminate each one as you go. Spark, then fuel.
One last thing, you replaced the anti siphon, but are you sure the gas tank vent is unobstructed? That can happen too. Take off the gas cap and see if it runs better.

Update:

The problem was the purple wire off the coil that after your key creates the initial power to start, the key moves to the run position. That wire was broken. We traced it and found the break on the starboard side down by the starter.

Solved it yesterday at 1:30pm!

Memorial Day saved!

Great thanks for the follow up it helps others who have hard to solve issues.
