Then why do some manufacturers add engine oil coolers?

If heat is something we don't have in marine engines, I DARE you to touch your manifold or block with BOTH hands after you have run WOT across whatever puddle you are on in Florida. Ric some of the things you say make me feel sorry for my gen. of "kids" those that are older still just shake their heads, those that are younger are learning from this nonsense. I turn 34 next week and I have learned that when you are wrong, just go ahead and admit it. Maybe if you closed your mouth and opened your ears, instead of taking everything that is put on the net as the gospel (cause if it is on the internet it has to be true, right?) you might learn a thing or 2 from those who have been there done that.

And my generation feels bad for the older ones. Example:

What does exhaust manifold temp have to do with engine oil? Last I checked exhaust manifolds are not lubricated by engine oil.

That makes no sense at all to even use that in comparison.

Why do some boats have oil coolers? Why not? Every car in the world virtually does. That's just good practice. Oil is a fluid that retains heat. Why not put a thermostatically controlled cooling system on it? Just makes sense to try and keep it at optimal temp just like everything else. Makes it last longer.

That's because of the 60 mph wind running under our oil pans... Oh wait, we don't have any wind running across the oil pans in our boats!

I was simply going off what you said "Heat, something we don't have in marine engines." Sorry to tell you we do. Heat breaks oil down that was my point. So a auto engine has different specs than marine engine. There are very different uses for each so each have there own set of guidlines that must be used. I know one thing from reading this threat. Ric is NEVER, EVER working on my boat, car, computer, or dog house for that matter.

I've owned 7 vehicles over 42 years of driving, the only ones that had oil coolers were air cooled VWs. Few modern vehicles use engine oil coolers. And trans coolers sometimes are added with the tow package.
Crusader and others add coolers for a reason with parts and production costs it has to be justified. They don't add it just because. It's because oil temps can be too high

You don't have an oil temperature gauge in your engines, do you Ric?
My old '84 Corvette did. At 220° coolant temps, cruising down the highway, the engine oil temp would typically be around 180°.
My '87 Galaxy Weekender 2100 did too, and at 160° coolant temps, at cruising speeds and high speeds, the engine oil temps would typically run upwards of 230°. Same engine.
Guess why it was different.

The problem with the young generation is not that they don't know anything. No generation has ever known anything when they were young. The problem is that, unlike previous generations, they now are too self-absorbed to even stop and consider that they might just have something to learn from the people who have been dealing with life for a helluva lot longer. You aren't born knowing everything, and the Internet, while a great tool, is no substitute for someone who "just knows" when they're trying to help.

Give me a young kid who comes to me with an attitude of "I don't know a damned thing but I will do my hardest every day to learn whatever you're willing to teach me." I'll take that kid any day of the week over most of what I see coming up today. Especially in IT, where I've spent my life for 28 years now.

But I've fought this battle with others in the same generation and know that it's a waste of time to even try. Smartass & bad attitude is a bad combination.

Wrong again!
There is a correlation between EGT's and oil shearing.
Petrol engines shear oil at a faster rate than diesels, because of this very fact.

Ric, how do you dream up this garbage? For my work, I subscribe to 2 e-manual sources. I searched "engine oil coolers" on both and found very few cars with them as I was certain many cars do not have them.

I imagine your reply will be about the wonderful weather in the sunshine state again.

Ok finally going to chime in.

Ric how deep of a hole are you going to dig. Up here in Canada they only go to 6' but maybe because you are in the sunshine state they just don't know when to raise the white flag

Dig a 6' hole in Florida, and it fills with water... I think he is trying to dig a new lake.

First off, I'm a dual Canadian/United States citizen, I know a little about being up north.

Oil sheer and chopping of the oil chains is what breaks down oil. Heat plays a part if you're burning it.

My car has water temp, oil temp, trans temp gauges. My engine oil is factory water cooled with a heat exchanger. It's a Lexus. Sure if you want to talk about a low tech Chevy yeah they have nothing and they also break down at 100k miles. A well built Toyota is just getting worn in at 100k.

Boat engines run COLD in terms of operating temps. 160-170 degree water temps is absolutely bare minimum in terms of efficiency. The modern internal combustion engine gets it's best efficiency around 210-220 degrees. Better fuel consumption. Less mechanical wear. That's why going closed loop cooling on a marine engine is the real way to go. All modern engines sold today (like the 6.0) come factory closed loop.

Let's not talk about Chevy in terms of technological advancements and design. You can go out today to the Chevy dealership and buy a new car with DRUM rear brakes. That's all you need to know. Garbage. Let MC/VP sell a real engine for a boat with DOHC and let's talk about power, design, and efficiency. GM does make DOHC marine engines, they're just not used by MC/VP. The crap we have in our boats are cash cows why get rid of that. The inboard world in Ski boats do use some pretty advanced engines.
