After truck shopping for 6 months with my 16 year old son I can assure you there are more Chevy, dodge and ford gas motors out there with 200,000 plus miles on them than Toyota's. At least here in Texas. And last time I was at the strip with my bud I didn't see many corollas or Lexus motors running in the finals. Guess those running Mopar, Chevy and ford setups are missing out on all that power.

They did have some riceburners running against some go karts...come on man! Don't even get into the power debate.

I'm no oil guru, but bear with me on this....heat is created by friction and the obvious combustion. How is it that less friction and combustion generated heat would be created by a marine motor than an auto motor. Keeping in mind the rpms on the boat motor are generally higher. I know you said your boat runs at less rpm than the auto in general, but that's with your Toyota tiny high rev no torque engine, right.

I have a 5.7 hemi and 5.3 vortec in my trucks and cruise speed is generally 2k rpms...my 5.7 in the boat gets run at 3.5 to 3.7 k rpms for easy cruising on avg. More rpms means more friction and more combustion, so how is my boat motor generating less heat? All that combined with the enclosed environment of the engine compartment of the boat. Again, I'm no guru expert but always thought that was one reqson the water running temp in marine motors was reduced.

I also understood that the free flowing raw water cooling system meant the moving water doesn't have the ability to absorb the heat from the engine as does a closed cooling system. Thats another reason for the reduced thermostat specs as compared to a closed cooling system. So the closed system is more effective at cooling the engine and that's the reason for the higher thermostat specs on those systems. Maybe I misunderstood but that was I took from the conversation on this topic from my bro who has been a master tech for Toyota for 30 years. He explained thats why you do not want to run an engine with no thermostat because water temp isn't equal to heat of the engine.

AND...I know for a fact that an engine can overheat while the water temp remains within limits. That was a prob with the 6.0 diesels, which I also owned. So hot the heads would warp and head bolts bust..the overheated oil would spill over into water overflow container and melt it....all while the water temp was normal....you would see white smoke in the exhaust from coolant spilling into combustion chamber.....point being the water temp doesn't equal engine temp.

I very well may be wrong but that's what was explained to me...I'm only a novice but have rebuilt four motors over the years and don't even understand all I know:-)

That being said, I remember when I was a kid, I thought that the Pontiac and Oldsmobile 455 was just slightly more powerful than the Chevrolet 454, but that the Ford 460 had them both beat. Of course, the engine to have was the Cadillac 500, since in my feeble young mind, displacement = power, and it was a linear equation fixed between all engine types and brands.

But really the Chrysler 426 Hemi ruled the streets; if you had one that was it..

Folks had a '71 Buick Electra / 455. It would overheat at stop lights but the power was endless and it was like driving a LazyBoy on the highway. At 6' tall I could nearly stretch my legs out straight in the back seat. Best drive-in movie car ever built. Our neighbors had a Coupe de Ville of the same year with the 500. Awesome engine but on long trips he had to stop every couple hundred miles to adjust the points.

We had 2 full size GMs back then, a '72 Chevy Impala with a 350 2bbl and a '75 Olds Delta 88 with a 350 4bbl Turbo 400 auto trans. Fun if thirsty vehicles. Very easy to work on no major mechanical issues . I really miss those vehicles and most modern cars leave me cold, ESP Japsnese ones . I drove them in the 80s and 90s but no interest in them at all now. Boring or bizarre styling overpriced parts and too complex for backyard mechanics. Only Detroit Iron for me from now on.

Now we're comparing diesels? This is getting rich.

I think this was once a discussion about oil. Here was what I went with today while winterizing:

Should be fine, that grade has also been recommended by Crusader.

I have used the 15W-40 Marine grade in my 7.4GiDP since new in 1997. No problems. I use the Amsoil brand.
