Thanks Graham, that's good to know! I always wondered about that.

Post up some pictures, the patterns on Chris's drive and my drive are almost identical. This is a paint defect as noted by volvo. Id be willing to bet your drive came form a differant lot, plus the salt water may make warranty work a hard sell.

The saltwater shouldn't be an issue. In fact I bought my boat from a marina on a freshwater lake. My boat and all the boats they sell come with the factory zinc anodes. I wash my boat after every saltwater use and flush the motor. This shouldn't happen after 18 months and 72hrs. I will post pics tomorrow.

As part of my investigation into the corrosion issue chris and I had with our boats my dealer and I checkd out 30-40 boats in his yard for similair signs of corrosion. From what I saw 1 and 2 year old boats with volvo penta drives that were used in the salt water were as corroded as 5-10 year old boats that saw only lake use. Keep in mind that most if not all of these boats were sold and serviced by my dealer. They were all lined up in rows so it was easy to compare and contrast them. Consistantly the boats used in salt were in worse shape.

Post up some pictures and lets see the patterns. The patterns or corrosion on Chris's drive and my drive are consistantly the same.

Just a thought here... sometimes a warranty or aftermarket paint job can be better than a factory job. If you agree to FW painting the drive - you should demand that all components affected be disassembled into peices. Everything stripped or ground down to bare aluminum and then painted up from scratch.

Pay attention and check on the progress each step of the way. The dealer will get paid either way - so they should be fine with it.

It might take some extra time out of your schedule -but could be worth it.

THink of cars... factory paint vs a high quality aftermarket paint job.

Ever thought of having a black volvo sx drive? :D

There's been some discussion of anodes in other threads, so I thought I'd post this here. I told someone I'd take some pictures of the anode locations on the previous generation Volvo drive.

Here's the drive anode:

And here's the transom shield anode:

Both pics have blue arrows pointing to the anodes, but the arrows might be hard to see.

BTW, those black "screens" on either side of the transom shield anode are part of the ACPS system. Here's the ACPS panel, mounted on the inside of the transom, behind the port exhaust elbow and partially hidden by the swim platform shower bag:

I did verify that the ACPS system is one of only two things wired directly to the battery (the bilge pump being the other). This probably explains why that battery (of the two) drains a hair faster than the other, even when the boat isn't in the water.

Mike,

FYI, The lower bracket on the MHP transom shield extends further forward and is held on by 5 bolts, not the 3 that can be seen on your pic. The anodes, one per side, are each screwed onto this bracket with 2 allen head bolts, which also retain the one piece bracket holding both ACPS electrodes. Where the single anode is in your pic, there is basically a hole for exhaust gases to pass through. I really do not know why my 5.7GXi has this transom shield; what I do know is that buying the 2 anodes is more expensive than just the single one, even though they are smaller!!

The bilge pump on my boat was permanently wired at the factory to both batteries, connected up behind the battery switch, not at the batteries. The factory wiring behind the switch includes some diodes, to prevent a faulty battery causing discharge of the other one. Maybe this set up is part of the CE requirements? The ACPS system was wired direcly to one battery only and this wiring looked to be very much of an afterthought; I have since moved the connection to the same point as the bilge pump.

Thanks Graham! Yes, I would suspect that your diode setup (sounds like an isolator, as diodes would prevent one battery from discharging into the other) is a CE requirement. People who know what they're doing (i.e., not me) always advise to add this to dual battery systems here in the States; they're probably required over there.

It's funny how some of the differences are with the MHP shield - I wonder what the thinking was behind some of that stuff. :| :?:

Mike,

According to my VP shop manual for the previous drive, the MHP shield and the two anodes were fitted as standard to the 7.4 and 8.2 models in the 1999 "WT" model year. Maybe it was still the same in 2003/2004? I suspect FW either accidentally fitted the wrong transom shield ( which would cost more to take off and replace by the time it was noticed, because some extra holes would have to be plugged), the boat was originally scheduled to have a 8.1 ( I wish!), or maybe they were short of the standard one at the time my boat was built; once fitted, the function is the same.

The latter happened a lot with cars; many years ago in the early 80's I had a 1971 Ford Escort Mexico. I found on leafing through an old parts catalogue, that due to a supplier strike when it was built and part shortages in the industry, 20 of them had brake calipers usually only fitted to Rolls Royces; mine was one of them! Spare parts were priced accordingly, so I bought a set of later standard calipers cheaper than the cost of a set of seals and pistons for the RR ones! I don't play around with old cars anymore, but I can use my old Imperial sockets, spanners etc on the American nuts and bolts on my boat.

Regards,

Graham
