I just noticed that mine gets hot. Not burning hot and hotter than I would have guessed it should get. I can touch it for 5 or 10 seconds but then I have to let go. Is this normal?

My pumps dont get hot.

I have a low pressure and a high pressure. Before my low pressure pump went bad last month, it would get hot to the touch.

However, just because it gets hot to the touch doesnt mean its going bad necessarily; restricted fuel flow can do this too and overwork the pump. Restrictions can be:
* sticking anti-siphon valve on the fuel tank
* fuel filter/water seperator needing to be changed
* old/bad rubber fuel lines
* bad/weak low pressure fuel pump
* bad gas or gas with water in it

Those are the biggest contributors. If all those check out, you might want to keep a spare fuel pump on board and the tools necessary to change if it were to fail out on the water.

I had 1 high pressure pump fail and the one I replaced it with started squealing like crazy after a few hours, plus it was hot. I have replaced and/or inspected everything. I even replaced the low pressure pump too. Someone told me that Sierra pumps suck, so I got a Johnson/Evinrude pump and it came with a new relay, so I figured that may have been the problem all along. The new pump only has about 2 hours on it and hasn't started squealing yet, but the heat concerns me, but I never noticed how hot the first one got and that one was probably the original one.

If its new it shouldnt be hot at all! I didnt know the history; you omitted those important facts about the pumps failing prior. This is alarming.

You need to go down the checklist I gave you. DONT assume anything is fine by looking at it. My boat had 90 original hours on it and had a bunch of crap stuck in the anti-siphon valve!!

You also should check the vent line on the gas tank - add that to the checklist.

Not many details other than what is here. Screaming high pressure pump failed and replaced, figured it was old and worn out. Got new pump and it started to do the same. Hoses replaced, fuel filter replaced, siphon valve works fine, vent is clear (even ran with gas cap off to be sure), and even replaced the low pressure pump. I have been through the system from one end to the other and I cannot find anything wrong, in fact everything looks great. I am stumped, and frustrated-the fuel pumps are not cheap.
