Ok so today I ran the boat and it ran great. Went for about an hour ride and came back when I was docking the engine died. I tied it up an restarted it and it ran fine.now here's when the proble started. I shut the motor of and it started die sling I was looking at the motor and on the final diesel it actually did a complete rotation in the opposite direction. Now it won start perios. You turn the key here the solenoide but the starter doesn't even attempt to engage. Any ideas ?

Dieseled ran backward sucked water up the exhaust and hydro/locked. Water in cylinders keeps in from cranking. Gotta get that water out fast, hope it's fresh and not salt. Pull out the spark plugs crank it over and see if water comes out of the cylinders. Squirt some wd40 to help get the water out, crank it over again. The replace the plugs and see if it runs. If so, you might have gotten lucky, but you MUST find and correct the cause of the dieseling. Like, idle too high, fuel mix too lean, timing off, fuel octane too low (try running mid range or premium). Carbon build up can also cause dieseling.

On my 4.3 I always run premium gas to avoid detonation and keep the idle as low as possible (better for shifting with a dog clutch outdrive). It has never dieseled in all the years I have had it.

Hurry the heck up and get the water out NOW or you will have a locked up engine!!
Is it in the water or on the trailer? If on the trailer, hook up the muffs remove the spark plugs, turn on the water and crank it over and see if water shoots out of the cylinders . Just do what I said above.....

I agree 100% with Louc! Get that saltwater out STAT.

I'd take out all of the spark plugs and then turn the motor over a few times to get the water out. Then spray wd-40 in each cylinder, crank it over again and blow that out.

Then put the plugs back in, hook the wires back up, and cross your fingers!!

So it's 12 and I have to be to work at 4:30 but the boat is running. Removed plugs cranked over cleared cylinder. Sprayed generous amounts of wd40 in every cylinder let it sit a few minutes and cranked all that out. Put plugs in and the boat fired up :D. I had it running for a half hour then we went for a moonless nigHt ride. Buoys are hard to see in the dark by the way. Soooo I'd like to say thank you for your help and is there anything else i should do.

Thanks
Jeff

Glad to hear your boat is running again! I'd run it as much as you can in the near future to keep the engine moving and consider an oil change soon.

Boating at night is my favorite - it helps to have a moon and use the reflection off the water to look for buoys, etc.

I'd change the plugs too.

good for you...now that's a dedicated boater...if you waited a week it would have been too late...

change the oil, plugs and find out why it dieseled...
idle too high...mixture too lean...carbon build-up....

when I set the idle mixture on my Quadrajet I set it on the rich side using the lean roll/rich roll method...

Well now that th major issue is gone I'll explain the symptoms. Some times when you come down from a plane high rpm run the boat will start to sputter and die. To start it back up I have to pump the throttle first. It only does this on long runs and not al the time. If I went down there right now started it let it warm up and took it out it would be fine. It seems to happen more after longer trips. I'm thinking definitely carb issue.

Which engine and carb do you have?
Sounds like the carb needs to at least set up (idle mixture, idle speed, replace fuel filter) if not re-built. What color were the spark plug insulators near the center electrode?

It's 4.3 omc 2 barrel carb sorry don't know brand. It doe seem to idle low. I'll replace fuel filter. What rpms shoul I be at idle?

Boat is a 95? I know the 2bbl on the '88s like mine was a Rochester 2bbl but some of the later ones used Holleys. In any case you have to look up the specs, but mine is supposed to idle between 500-600 rpm in the water in foward gear. The engine has to be in good tune for it to run that slow without stalling. Mine is a dog clutch Cobra (I bet you have the Volvo style cone clutch) and with the dog clutch it shifts much better if the idle is as low as possible. I get out my timing light and engine meter.
First I check the points/condenser (dwell) and timing (you don't have points so just the timing).
Then I set the base idle speed.
Next Idle mixture.
I adjust each needle carefully watching the tach. Screw it in SLOWLY till the engine starts to slow down (lean roll point). Then unscrew it SLOWLY, it will speed up, then slow down again (rich roll point) the proper setting is between these 2 points. I set mine toward the rich side.

Other things that can cause stalling at idle--vaccum leaks under the carb gasket ,sometimes you can hear it (sounds like a whistling sound) that can make it run lean and stall. The fix is a new carb to manifold gasket.

Thanks lou I'll work on that tonight. It does idle around the 600 rpms and can run good at idle some of the times. Would to low of temp thermostat effect this at all. It only gets to 130 to 140. I thought I read that they should have a 160 thermostat.

thermo is probably not closing all the way but no that would not make it stall per se. Carb may need re building and make sure all the ignition wires are in spec for resistance.
